Anyone know what causes this? I've tried all sorts of thing to stop it but nothing works. I've tried the rubber where the top tailgate meets the shelf, the brackets on either side where it rests but so far I've been unable to get rid of the squeak entirely. It really spoils the otherwise excellent ride/experience!

Sure its the actual parcel shelf? Are the two side 3/4 side trim panels securely fixed? You know the bits that have the rear seat unlock buttons in them?

I'd also have a serious look at these. It's easy to have them out then not clip them correctly to the bodywork when they're replaced. I've got a fire extinguisher mounted on top of one of mine and, when I didn't clip it back correctly, it rattled and banged away. I also replaced the self tapper on the front of these with one a lot beefier.

Or centre brake light cover, curtesy light in the top tail gate

Had the same noise! I put the girlfriend in the boot drove down the farm track (Smooth tarmac) and got her to push on everything that might be making the noise... It was the plastic cover on the top tail gate that wasnt seated right. A quick remove and refit and the squeak went instantly...:)

Now its silent inside...:D

You mean she's still locked in the boot.;):)

Its the best way to locate it. Before stuffing her in the boot I did the same as you and started stripping the inside out until the noise went... She was in there 5 seconds and found it!

I did tell her "I thought it might be that" tho ;)
