Afternoon all, I was out driving yesterday evening and as it got dark I switched on my instrument panel light, as i did, the engine temperature shot up from its usual half way to near the red zone, turned it off and the temperature went back to normal, anyone had this happen, obviously the engine temp was fine, just a bit odd.

Have you been in amongst it recently and done anything?

If not I would suspect an earth issue first or a wire short. Behind the dash perhaps.

Bit of investigation needed me thinks:)

Good luck

J

It sounds like there could be a short in the wiring somewhere behind the panel. This is causing extra voltage to be fed to the gauge when the instrument panel light is on.

Seems that I was typing at the same time as the above poster.

Check that the speedo earth connection is clean and tight. If the speedo earth isn't good, the current through the bulb in the speedo can affect the voltage stabiliser for the gauges (which is bolted to the back of the speedo) and make the readings increase. If the earth is suspect, you might find the speedo bulb is a bit dim as well (although they're not exactly bright at the best of times) :)

I had a similar thing happen. I scratched a large pentagon in the floor, lit a fire and sacrificed next doors guinea pig to Swarf, God of the Series.

Still does it. :(
