Hi Guys,

for my next disaster i picked up some +2" pro comp springs from gumtree. i fitted them and all seems well.

other than the 2 front ones dont seem to want to sit in the spring seats correctly. they sit flat at the back but not the fronts????

is this common is it because the seats are rusty and the springs need to be whacked into place? or am i missing something??

If the seats are that rusty, might be worth getting a new set, they are only cheap.
Any chance of a pic of what you are describing?

Personally I would replace those seats, they look pretty corroded. Could well be rust stopping the springs seating. Or maybe the aftermarket springs aren't very good tolerances. More likely rust, I would think.

that is the front view of the 2 springs, they just dont seem to want to go down all the way. i have even taken them on some cobbles in the hope that the shaking will push then down but they have not budged. the only other think i can think of is a crow bar and a lump hammer to gently persuade them down. i know the seats are not expensive, its more the time waiting for them to get here.

Take em off, and try and remove some of the corrosion with a chipping hammer and wire brush, then a coat of rust resist primer! ;)

sometimes you just need a fresh pair of eyes on the job. the seats are knackered, its like trying to polish a turd! i have ordered some new ones should be here before weekend.

thanks for looking and your advice

they are stiff springs plus front spring plate sits at an angle as std more so when lifted, put the close coils at the top

cheers guys,

i have just been out with a crow bar and a hammer and smashed the plates a bit and all the rust fell off and they dropped into place :) i will still fit the new ones when they get here because thats got to be better.

but this just underlines the golden rule of hit it with a hammer!

i am fairly sure they are. they have seated now after beating the rust off the seats. is there a definitive guide on how to fit the springs? i have a feeling i have the back on the front and vice versa

Nahh you wont, you will do what the rest of us do and stick them in the shed and do them next week :)

in fear of sounding stupid. what would i search for?

i have tried on here and the google things like suspension spring location and where to position springs but the search query is very vague. what is the term i am looking for? so i can identify which spring goes in which corner?

i took her on the motorway last night night for the first time, it was like driving a bowl of jelly, i will be making some spacers and getting the anti roll bars back on asap!

Land rover Discovery spring ratings, Land Rover Discovery coil spring positions. Just guessing. I am working, wil try and have a look for ya later on! :)

cheers pal, i will try what you have suggested and if i get any results i will update to save you looking.
Try this one. There is a useful chart on post 5! ;)
The chart is about standard springs, but it will give you an idea that this is not a simple issue. The springs are unique to the corner of the vehicle they fit, and options are available for usage.
When you go to aftermarket springs, it becomes even more complicated. Some are not compensated for weight distribution, some are over length, etc. etc.
I am not really qualified to advise on non standard, I never use them myself, genuine standard work fine for me.
