Hello all,

I've had the RR diffs on for a while now and so my speedo reads about 30% low...plus it was never that accurate anyway! Given the fact that speed cameras are growing like mushrooms round here I think it's time I got it sorted...so question is what to do?

Could I fit a Defender Speedo - would that work with the same cable?
Could I get mine recalibrated - would need to recalibrate the odometer too...
What do I do if I fit a new speedo, just write to DVLA?

Cheers

D

Ooo, good question.
Defenders have about 4 different gears listed for different size tyre which probably won't give you the size of adjustment you require and probably wouldn't fit anyway.

Most speedo calibration is digital these days. There was a place that put electronic speedos in old boxes using the original face (then you put a pickup and magnet on the prop). If you have no luck, I'll see if I can find the details.

Far as I know, you don't have to tell the dvla.

Good point defenders have little plastic pop on/off gears in gearbox end don't they whereas the series is a (fixed?) metal gear....guess it would mean a different speedo housing and gear and lots of messing around...gah!

I'm sort of tempted to go for an electronic one but seems like cheating to me!

Won't a garage re-calibrate speedos and if they do how do they do it?

Also on the subject of lights I'm thinking of fitting some red bulbs behind the dash so its like I'm in an old second world war bomber when night driving :D

Doubt it would be gps...you'd be buggered in tunnels! I'm guessing it would be like on my mate's kit car you glue a little magnet to something like a brake drum and mount a little sensor near it. We set his up by doing a meausred mile then tweaking it by gps....

I've not found anyone round here that does speedos but guess the tacho places would have in the past but they;re all digital now aren't they?

iv just thought about this topic too, iv just done rr diffs...... so does it mean the spedo is reading slow ? ...

Yes will measure low, so odomoter will go about 30% slow as will speedo i.e.

at 30mph it will read ~22mph
at 40mph it will read ~30mph

that is of course assuming that you have the right size tyres, the speed cable is working properly and the speedo magnet is still at full strength etc, etc...

yeah i am trying to get rid....

erm thats quite good so i thought mine was being slow but obviously not then i didnt think about spedo, so if mine does 50/60 i guess 60 is about 75 ?

Yes going from speedo to real speed add a third to reading, when going from real speed to speedo multiply by 3/4 (roughly actually 4.7/3.54)

so 50 ~ 66
60 ~ 79!

Never had mine that fast but now I've ditched the crappy chinese copy dissy it might manage it...
