Disco 2 Speed limiter for 20 mph?

In just over a month, 30 mph speed limits will be mostly replaced by 20 mph here in Wales.

I’ve been trying it out, and it’s a nightmare. I’m spending a dangerous amount time looking at the speedo. I have a very light right boot, but even pootling along in 2 isn't much help.

I’m thinking about some sort of speed limiter and/or alert. Modifications to cruise control? Something connected to the rev counter? Any suggestions, gadgetmeisters?

There's a overspeed warning built in to the P38 on switch 2 on the indicator stalk. Starting speed is 20, then up 5MPH for every additional press of the switch. Is this feature not on the Disco?

I use cruise control a lot on mine, it simply won't function as low as 20mph. So I just put it in a very low gear, fortunately so far these areas are very small and only in the centres of towns. My TomTom beeps if I get to 35 K so warns me, but yes driving with at least one eye on the speedo isn't a safe way opf doing things.
In the UK we have yet to experience too much of this.

No P38-type control on my Disco. I wonder whether the Gulf-only overspeed warning could be rigged for a lower speed?

Looks like I'm going to have to drive around in 1. Or experiment with low range.
 
You could fit a digital speedo and position it on top of dash so easier to see.
I used an App on my phone until my son bought me this gizmo.
About size of fag packet and plugs into lighter socket, works off GPS.
 
There is a huge variety of HUD (speedo head up display) devices from cheap to expensive, depends what you want. I fitted a chinese projector about two years ago and i'm very happy with it, something like this speed projector google out "car speedometer HUD gps display" ... disregard those with OBD2, look just for GPS, example of a cheap(ish) one: HUD

Not massively different to looking at the speed on your TomTom which does warn you if you overspeed by a 5 kph margin.

Just the figures are bigger.

It's a huge difference from my point of view. I've been there before i decided to buy a dedicated speedo HUD... i was fed up by all the other intructions i've got on a route which i knew so didnt need navigation to a point and if the route is not set it will yell continuosly to turn around or so... if you see what i mean, IMO a gps navigation unit is completely unproper to be used only for overspeed warning , i'm using it only if i go to destinations which are new to me.

The trick with TomTom is to leave the last destination as your home town so that you drive through it on your way home. Then it stays quiet, gives no instructions and just shows you a map of where you are and beeps if you overspeed which you can turn off too if you want.

I wouldn't have a TomTom if we didn't need it for routes we don't know well, and we do still explore a lot round where we are, especially going to new vineyards(!). So no, we don't just use it as a speedo!!!;)
 
Just curious but is there any point of using Tom Tom or Garmin nowadays with the free navigation apps incorporated in mobile phones ?

As for a HUD, I have this multifunctional display installed -

AUTOOL X95

It's not a HUD in the real sense but it also has a GPS speeding alarm with an adjustable threshold. The only snag that I can see is that it will sound the alarm (one beep) each time you exceed the set speed limit. But there is an option to disable the audible alarm, which will give you just a visual over-speeding warning, i.e. the colour of the digital speed reading will change to red.

Some really useful ideas for me here, thanks everyone.

If you're visiting Wales after mid September, be prepared for an almost blanket 20 mph limit in built-up areas.

I don't see how this 20 limit will be legally enforceable.. other than.. 'because i say so'
If 20 is the new default, then other roads that are still 30 will need repeater limit signs, otherwise those won't be enforceable
Or will it be 2 default limits? In which case it's not a default limit.
It's just an ill thought out mess

To first point.
Yes, it means you don't have to play around with your blessed phone!!

I hate mobile phones and only use mine when I really have to. Plus you still have to mount it and have it somewhere where plod won't think you are using it to break the law. Screen smaller too.

That Autool thing is fuggly as sin, and the disply looks tiny.

I beg to differ but then, one man's fish is another man's poison :)
 
Just had to drive across town and back so had a little play.
Cruise control will only go down to 25 mph in any gear.
in 1st auto 30 k i.e. 18.75 mph is doable at about 2100 revs, noisy but controlable. So low 2nd prolly OK for 30 mph.
