What a disaster!

it went in today and was a complete nightmare. ive accepted the 5-6hours of welding that it needs but i got all this too:

rear fog lamp not working (and interior light)
interior hazard light not working
rear reflector missing
fuel cap not sealing properly
brake pedal spongy
front brake flexi hoses deteriorated
front pads
both front bearings loose
rear shock bushes

worst of all. "steering box has relative movement between sector shaft and drop arm"

they said the parking brake "efficiency below requirements"

and! emmisions were 3.05 :( over by 0.05!

complete cock! right. most of the first lot are fine. however it passed last years MOT without a rear fog light. does my 1984 90 need one? the steering box feels fine, with little play. it is a little stiff. anyone got a good manual one kicking around that dont leak?

fuxk knows whats wrong with the hand brake. it was serviced back in june/july! and my emissions suck! anyone know how to get around it? it was 1.5 last year. how has it doubled?

come on then you experienced old folk, tell me what to do!

also, does anyone fancy doing the welding for me down here in Bristol?

cheers. im really counting on you now guys!

run some injector cleaner through - that'll help with the emissions.
adjust yer steering box a tad more and take it somewhere else fer re-test - some places just don't understand Land Rovers!
the rest of it is fairly minor - replacing the pads and flexi's will cure the brakes and the handbrake probably just needs adjustment after bedding in.

if yer comin down this way, my son can probably help with the weldin (have ter be working hours though).

if a fog light is fitted it has to work, i don't think it was law til 86 so you might be able to take it off and cheat, replace the pads and brake hoses, its prob the hoses causing the spongy pedal.
is the hazard light telltail part of the switch?
on second thaught the fog light is prob a fooze

forgot to add. these guys did my MOT last year. i didnt have a fog light fitted at all then. i since fitted one with the aim of wiring it up, but i never got around to it. the hazards work, its just the dash light for the hazards doesnt. dont worry tre, i will be taking it somewhere else for retest.

cheapest i found steering box is M&M 4x4. looking at about £120 for a recon unit IF my old one can be made right.

doesnt seem much wrong with it to be honest, it does leak more than my last one though.

any MOT testers here want to clarify the fog light point? i need to be able to contest it.

thanks for the offer tre. as my prev MOT ran out, my 90 is now ilegal to drive, so cant get to cornwall really :( shame. looks like i will be paying £40/hr!

Doh!
Lesson 1
Always git yer MOT done a month before it runs out! If, by some miracle it passes first time, they will post-date it.

Aside frum the welding Griffy, there int much there that'd be a challenge, annoying, but norra challenge............that sed you must of got one total caaaaaarnt of a tester! Like G-spot sez tho', new filter makes a worl' of difference. Failing that, that common fix that Adz the siontist sed about wiv yer fuelling (I carnt remember it, mine runs on proper petroil), he sorted HB's **** heap wiv it tho'. :D

cheers marcus, yer its not too bad. just means i gotta get out in the cold and sort that **** out! will prob get a recon steering box as i dont want to keep paying £50/test for them to tell me its still crap.

for the emissions im going to adust the tappets, replace air filter and use that injector cleaner stuff. might even use injector pump adjustment that charlesY said about on that thread ages ago. still looks a bit complicated though.

not looking forward to the brakes!
