Hi guys,

I thought I would update you all and see if you guys have any idea where I should go from here !!

My 1.8 was juddering so took it for a service as advised, I was told that plug 1 was flooded with oil which would explain the juddering whilst driving !!

My issue is now ..... what has done this ? I have read about and it seems the most likely is the gasket that surrounds the chambers. I had my head gasket done about 6 months ago so wouldnt this have been changed when that was done ? if so would it have gone so quick?

Should I take it back and get then to fix this and if so should they do it free or do you thing i would have to pay? and how much !

Thanks

Oil is not normally an indicator of hgf.

The fire ring would have to fail, but this would allow coolant in as well.

Causes will be knackered valve stem oil seals......, these are a few £ each, best to replace the full 16, Mike Satur is doing an offer on these £1 each

or worst case knackered piston rings/oval cylinder liner.

Thanks for your reply NI,

How much do you think it would cost to get this done at a garage? also is it ok to drive it about until its fixed ?

Thanks again

It's a a head off case, which is basically the amount of labour to do hgf, but more after that.

Tappets, collets, valve, valve spring and valve stops all have to come out, that's just for one valve. 4 for each cylinder.

A couple days labour (full 16) for a decent mechanic, best to to all 16 as it could only be a matter of time before the others fail.

I find the rubber gets brittle, you certainly couldn't refit a used one.

At least!

I just did a rebuild, took me weeks, but I was only tinkering an hour here and there.
I did make the valve spring compression tool from scrap and polish the valve ports and throats (extra work not needed)

Do bears crap in the woods?

I drove my FL for thousands of miles with hgf in cyl 1,

Assuming you have compression (mechanic should do this before taking head off to check if piston rings have gone) then you can drive it.

But it will be burning oil, so check levels and keep the revs down.

Do you mean that the No 1 cylinder was full of oil ?
If so why wasnt it smoking like a lab Beagle ? wouldn't that much oil would be going down the exhaust.
Or do they mean the well that the plugs sit in was full of oil?
is the oil coming from the cam cover gasket?

Okie Dokie mate, Well at least thats something!! Ill keep topping it up and try to make it last a few weeks as i think its going to need a new exhaust before the mot next month lol

I think they meant the well it sits in was full of oil, it drives like its missing, not always but it is getting worse, after the service today at kwikfit they said they had to drain it before doing anything but its driving ok now so i presume it will just come back in over a few weeks!!

Petrol/matches anyone lol

Would it make a difference if its the well then Edge ?

Im 99.9% sure he said the well, I can ring them in the morning to get confirmation!

Could the well cause the mis firing ?

If its only leaking into the plug well a cam cover gasket might well cure the problem, at the least it means there is nothing too nasty going on inside the motor .at this point I have my fingers crossed to ward off evil thoughts and mischevious imps:rolleyes:
And yes having the plugs sitting in a three inch deep pool of oil wont help ignition much
I had a similar problem with water ingress after I power washed the motor and filled the wells with water:eek:

Thanks for the info Edge, it started about a week ago with a little chugging and loss of power, it's always started ok though! Over thecweek it's gradually got worse so it's gone in for a service thinking it might just be a dodgy plug.

Will this Cam cover gasket cost me much to buy/ get fitted ?

If its just the well the rocker cover gasket or the cam carrier 'seal' are the culprits.

tbh because KICK FIT have been all over your motor, I'm not convinced by anything those numpties state.

the clearance between the two types of gasket above, would cause minimal oil leakage, if not done right, you can get a slight seepage, but usually nothing major.

Dont go back to KF,

EDIT - Is your motor still with them?

I took it there as it is just down the road and I thought it was just a plug issue so they could change the oil etc and do the few bits and change the plugs.

They gave me a sheet with faults and said it was flooded with oil and they had to drain it before doing anything. The car is back with me know so I need to take it and get it checked by a garage.

Is this cam cover expensive to get fitted? And if it's that is it safe to drive still?

Thanks both of you for your info.

In Nottingham mate, just short of money at the minute with being layed off and got the MOT in 4 weeks lol
