spare wheel carrier

It's a valid question. The D3 and 4 stow the spare wheel below the body giving the rear of the vehicle the possible look of a van rather than the traditional 4x4 so lifting the spare wheel up onto a swing away carrier might seem to be a good idea to some owners.
The D1 and D2 always did have the spare wheel on the rear door which although the weight does throw some extra strain on the hinges, many people do like the look of the wheel on the back door.
So the question remains "Why?"
And I would also respectfully suggest that your comment isn't exactly the best way of winning friends and obtaining reasonable answers.

I was asking a perfectly valid question why answer it with a question .
The reason I asked is because the D2 carries the spare on the door, which is hinged to the side.
If you had some modification in mind or I could understand the reason you needed to do it I may have been able to suggest something to help.
Oh well!

Hi, Does any one know if a swing away carrier is made for Disco 2? I've looked in the usual places, Disco 3&4 yes but not 1&2.

Never seen an actual fitting kit for one but as @neilly says, they are available as part of an HD rear bumper set up, probably worth ringing around some suppliers or maybe even hit up your local steel fabrication shop and get a nice bit of bespoke custom engineering to suit your needs perfectly.

Thanks Neilly

Why should I have to justify my reasons for posting a question,I am looking for an answer to my question, not to satisfy your curiosity this is my final post on this subject

Well sometimes people search these threads looking for info which might help them before asking a question. Including as much info as possible, not only helps people answer your question but also helps other members who may have a similar question for the same reason as you. That's what this forum is all about. Not really doing yourself any favours by giving attitude to people who may be able to help you with any future questions you might have...

I should have answered your question at the beginning, the answer based on my limited 21 years of of D1 and 2 interest plus 10 years with RRc the answer is NO.
But by removing the disco spare wheel from the rear door I suspect that with bit of engineering skill it would be possible to install the swing away carrier that was intended for the RRc which were handed, so if you wished, two spare wheels could be hung on the back as they did in the Outback with the RRc.

I'm curious aswell as I can't think of anything behind my spare wheel that I need access to.

It's not so much the access behind it but the weight of the spare on the door and the stress imparted on the hinges, I've had hinge pins snap and wear excessively in my opinion from the weight of the spare on the door, a wheel carrier linked to the door saves your hinges.

Yes, that looks like an alternative.
Personally preferred the bumper without the wheel carrier though, but its an option.

He did a very good job with the bumper didn't he :)

I liked the wheel carrier but I think I would have been inclined to put it on a parallelogram so that it opened with the door, not really sure though as I think this is a good way of reducing the stress of a 65lb spare wheel hanging off the door :)

It's hard though as you need at least one spare if you're driving off road and with it being out on the back it doesn't compromise the internal load carrying space, I took mine off the back door for a while and it was actually quite nice being able to open and close the back door easily and on a slope without it trying to knock me off my feet lol

I'd have thought the reason for wanting a swingaway for any rear door mounted spare was obvious.

Maybe that's because I'm more tratter inclined but its hardly dummy spit territory either way.
