Having got myself a set of 5 x new BFG 265/75/16 tyres fitted to my Boosts, Im a bit concerned about security of the spare wheel which I keep strapped in the rear load area. Having a £170 tyre on a £100 Boost alloy in the back of my 110 is an easy temptation for thieves.

So, seeing as most of my journeys are short local drives, would I be ok to carry my old 7.50x16 tyre on its modular rim as a spare? For longer journeys I would carry my BFG/Boost spare.

Is the difference in size between the 7.50 tyre and the 265/75 tyres too great for short limps home, where I would then change it for my BFG spare?

My spare is a 205/16 and the tyres I run are 7.5/16. Not much difference really but when I do use it its only ever on for very short periods of time. Never caused any problems

Hi, I run 16" Disco alloys on my Defender, but not having a matching spare I have a 15" with higher profile tyre that has the same overall circumference as the 16". Take a piece of string and measure around middle of tread on both wheels. if they are the same there should be no problem. Regards, Caliban.

It would be fine on a disco as the diffs are open anyway, the diff that the spare is connected to would just be working as though its constantly cornering. If your diff is a bit worn then it could in theory cause premature failure but not on a short journeys, if you was doing the length of the country then maybe...
