I only got one ignition key with the 1997 300tdi that l just bought.

I got a blank key from Ebay and had it cut, but while it operates the ignition, it won't start the Defender unless the other key is nearby!

So the original key must have a chip/transponder in it.

How do l go about getting a spare key that will actually start the vehicle? Do l need to go to a main dealer?

There isn't a separate radio transponder attached to the main key ring is there for an aftermarket immobiliser and needs to be close to the new key? or does it still have the factory immobiliser in operation?

If you try to start it with the new key, the ignition turns on and the key will go into tbe start position, but the starter motor does not operate. On the dashboard warning lights an orange key symbol flashes (below the fuel gauge) and the horn beeps twice

Have you tried timpsons, the key and show people, i did the same thing as you on my old golf, they insisted it had an immobilizer, i insisted it didn't, tried the standard key and they were right..... They did tell me they can program a new key with the immobilizer bit in it, but was too embarrassed to go back, they quoted about £30, but this was about 4 years ago.

I have this issue with TD5 - only one key and one immobiliser fob. Cant for the life of me find someone to do me a new fob without going into a lady dealer :-(

Find someone with a nanoocm or hawkeye and get them to program you a new fob.
Or buy one of the above for yourself as they can be a handy thing to have when you own a td5.

My local Land Rover specialist supplied me with a second hand remote fob for £15 and programmed it to my Defender.
So now both keys work! It seems you need the remote fob with the key, before it will start.
