Well, after a few abortive attempts to make my own (time, etc and faff) I coughed up and bought a Southdown Snorkel off ebay, £139 for the non-finished version ... and it's arrived!

Looks good, definitely not finished, but if anyone's seen the paintwork and scratches on my Disco a non-finished snorkel is the least of it's worries! and i intend eventually to paint it black anyway .. ;)

So .. any tips I need to know? Has anyone fitted a Southdown before and if so, is the template good?

I know the Safari, from two different and unknown to each other people, template is quite a way off in it's screhole positioning and I'd hate to cut my wing on the top and find it's wrong .. ;)

My mate fitted one to his Disco couple of months back, 300tdi...

no major problems, the template was good enough, just had to file it a bit, but not much hassle..

have you tried fitting it yet paul? i'm ordering one for myself on tuesday andwas wondering, just how unfinished are they?

would love to see a photo when you've fitted it please - its on my shopping list, but i've not seen one fitted.

cheers

Not fitted yet, away green-laning with 90boy, Timc and Nathan this weekend, so will be fitting sometime this week.

The 'non-finished' part is just that the tube isn't polished! There are still all the manufacturing marks etc on it ...

Wish I had the time!

Been away all bank holiday weekend and working the rest. Plus the school carpark (I'm a school caretaker) has a trench across it and we can't get the Disco or wifes car near the house so I don't really want to work on it and have to leave my tools outside on the road/other side of the carpark!

Hoping to do it this weekend, maybe next, as we're not supposed to be going out, but that nearly always changes ... ;)

Check the date of the post you're replying to ... ;) We went on 22/23 Sept, seen green laning forum, Long Mynd thread ... ;)

I go laning most weekends, often somewhere away from Doncaster 'cos the wife liks caravanning so we go away most weekends too! Anyone would be welcome to tag along anytime, but it depends where you are as to whether it'll be worth it. If we go to an area I don't know I don't go far as I'm mostly on my own so getting stuck is simply avoided ...

Sorry for bringing back up a relatively old thread but.......

For snorkels I think Southdown is my favourite, but what is the difference between the finished and non-finished versions.

WTF is a 'Sateen Finish' anyway?

I can't see any difference in the photos, so why pay the extra?

Any thoughts ??

(Hopefully I'll get one soon - I'm hoping to get 'permission' to buy and fit one for Xmas)

<shock> Nathan's right </shock>

Polishing costs .. I just got the cheapest and used wire wool to take the worst marks off, but in the end it doesn't matter. Unless you're up close and persnal to the snorkel you can't tell the difference from mine (el cheapo non-polished) to a new one (on a mote's Disco) when you've been out a few times in the rain . ;)

Thee's always a distinct possibility that you'll scratch it when fiting too .. the clamp is a tight fit and sharp-edged.
