hi ive got a noise from the front i think, sounds louder in drivers seat, just like a wheel bearing but ive no play in wheel when jacked up, i was fixing another problem which required me to disconect the front prop but when i drove it without front prop the bearing noise stops, its not the vcu support bearings as ive just changed them, its not a whine but huming sound just like a wheel bearing, the sound is speed related and gets louder as i drive faster and is still there when i drop clutch and slow down, any ideas anyone, cheers rob

possibly the ird pinion. is there any play in it? if you drain the ird oil it can be removed for inspection.

hi, there is slight play at flange, if i drain oil and undo the bolts will the gear just pull out, is it the bearing or actual pinion that might of failed, thanks rob

Well the fact that there is play shows the bearings are worn. This will also cause the pinion to move out of mesh with the crownwheel which can wear or even chip the teeth. Then there is the possibility that the crownwheel bearings are also worn creating more movement and noise/wear....and so it goes on....

Hopefully if the noise is only slight it will cured just by replacing the pinion bearings. No guarantee though. Obviously fit a new pinion oil seal at the same time.

hi i drained oil from ird and on the drain plug was metal filings, does that mean my transfer box is on its way out ? if i take out pinion will i be able to replace just the bearing and would i have to buy a puller or would bearing just slide off, and finaly ( sorry for loads of questions ) where would i be able to get a new bearing from, thanks rob

metal filings are always evident to an extent but don't jump to conclusions yet.

take out the pinion and check it. spin it in it's housing, is it noisy? you could remove it and visually check the bearings.
also look into the ird at the crownwheel teeth that it meshes with.
is there any movement/lift in the crownwheel?

hi thanks for advice, i was planning to take pinion out at the weekend and mentioned it to neighbour and he said try different tyres ! ive got another set ( steel with coopers on ) so i changed from my alloy 16" to the 15" wheels and noise had changed, i checked tyre pressure and they were at 30 all round, so dropped to 26 and noise was nearly non existant, i experimented with pressures and at 22 on the front and 26 at rear the noise as completely gone, i dont know what damage i can cause with 22 on the front but it works !! rob

Oh right, result then.:)
Strange the noise went when you removed the prop though.
I'm wondering if playing with tyres/pressures/amount of wear etc is altering front to rear ratio. But that's a whole new ballgame.
