For a private sale. Seller should send off the V5 to notify the DVLA they no longer own the vehicle. The new buyer should have completed the section New Keeper on the form. The DVLA would then send the logbook to the new owner. This is important as the registered keeper could be liable for motoring and other offenses. So you want to let them know you don’t own it anymore. From memory, both the buyer and the seller are supposed to send off different sections of the V5 doc, and it is printed in capital letters that they must do this.
This is all clearly printed on the V5 logbook.
The new keeper gets the V5C which is a small green tear off section of the logbook. This would then be used to tax the car as the new keeper. As the logbook may take several weeks to process and get to you. There is nothing for a new keeper to send in or post however.
And in recent year with online taxing. You only need the details off of the V5C and you can do it online.
