In a pickle here, MOT is due at the end of the week and the rear x member needs replacing, due to crap finances i can't afford a new one and the one on it is fooked beyond repair i believe, so it's going to fail on it for sure. I've got the bits and done the other areas that needed doing, so it's just the arse end thats the issue and after paying off my insurance it has left me short.

Hopefully in a few weeks i can afford one and get it done, but is it worth SORNing the Landy till then as by the time i've sent the form off and it's regsitered i should have it done. Also can the coppers tell it's outside the mot with them cameras on the cars or is it just insurance they check?

Not sure what to do as this is my only form of work transport and being a builder carrying toolboxs and planks of wood on a pushbike is frowned upon...

If you SORN it, you can not drive it on any form of public highway what so ever, it must stay on private land, so it really isn't worth bothering if you are going to be getting it sorted out pretty soon. It'll just create more paperwork for some poor bugger in an office in Swansea. As for police being able to check whether or not you have a valid MOT, yes they can. I got pulled earlier this year because my MOT had expired. I had no idea it was due and they did let me off the hook under the condition that I got it booked in the day after, which I did. I got lucky though, I'm sure most of them will just give you a fine (~£60) once you're outside the grace period. Just sort it and then drive it. If it's not got an MOT, keep it well off the roads.

If i remember right u only have arc? cant you borrow a mig and plate it up just to get it past nothing is beyond repair if you have time!
Good luck if you try to get away without sorn its all computerised and they know even if you hid it in the garage! But they do send warning letters out so you might be in luck

If it's taxed and insured I thought you'd be ok leaving it parked outside, you're just not allowed to drive it without an mot.

didn't you used to get a 2 week grace period for mot??

I thought there was a grace period but that was a long time ago, i dont really wanna sorn it tbh, but i dont wanna get pulled and my landy taken away like they do with no insurance! I'd be in the nick for going bananas at anyone trying to take it away on a trailer.

I've got a mig welder here as well, but i honestly think its fooked beyond repair as in alot of places the steel has begun to flake apart like the pages of a book

I wouldn't sorn it if its being used on the road. I would rather be pulled for no MOT than using a car that has been sorn'd. I would play the daft laddie if pulled ( yes I know before you say it) and take the advice of the nice policeman when he tells you its out of date. I reckon my cars used to go better without tax discs.

Paul,

Just how bad is the x member?

Could you just put a chequer plate over it as a short term fix? Hammerite the lot.

I wouldn't sorn it as if you were caught the penalty would be far worse than just forgetting to re-tax it. If you're stuck I have a small mig you can borrow - I'm in Winchester.

I appreciate the offer Blue, but i have a mig and i can't see how this can be fixed within the time limit etc, it wouldn't work trying to cover it up either :(

I'll take my chances, lady luck may shine this week, who knows but its a lesson learnt not to leave everything till the last minute

If you get stopped for no Mot, the nice constabule might give you 21 days to get it sorted out ... but only if you plead that you didn't know it had run out as your testing station doesn't send out reminders.

Do not go SORN, as that is admitting that you have no Mot if you get caught!

Fortunately, mine gives me a call 6-8 weeks before the current test runs out!

With the rear cross member, you might be ok if you remove your tow-bar. I only had to plate up mine because it was within 30 cm of a towbar fitting (they might get you on body mounts though). Not sure. have you got any photos of what it looks like at the moment?

oh btw, they're a bit more forgiving on MOTs than tax and insurance (I forgot, honest officer!), however, if they deem it to be in an unroadworthy state when they stop you, they _can_ seize the vehicle!!

So let me get this right. This guy is asking how he can drive his Landy without an MOT and if he gets caught what will give him the minimum penalty?
Sorry chum no matter what your justification regarding not enough dosh for a few days till it gets fixed - don't drive it until fixed and MOT'd.

Umm no i never asked that at all, perhaps you should re read the thread? I asked if it's worth SORNing a vehicle for a week as it'll take me a little over the MOT due date to get the rear x member fixed. If you read other peoples opinions on the matter, then a few have said a week or a few days ( if caught ) the coppers are likely to be lenient if your booked in asap or at the most a 60 quid fine.

In an ideal world i'd agree with you, and i'm not making excuses for the over due MOT if it is, but lets be honest, what a **** attitude you have. Are you a jobs worth? go by the book in absolutely everything in life do you? Never late for anything? I doubt it.
If the matter of an MOT being late for a week puts other road users in danger then yes i'd remove it, but it's not going to, so common sense or let's put it another way, human nature allows me to make a decision which may not be what you would do, but hey, i'm not you.....thankfully.

I haven't read the thread, so I mite have got the wrong idea here, but I cannot see the problem....
SORN has nothing to do with an MOT. It is to do with Road tax. Yu can apply for tax up to a month before it expires, so apply for tax before the MOT expires.
As for running the car after the MOT expires, the chances are that if you have an accident, you will be uninsured. That is a different matter entirely and is more of a moral judgement. Heaven forbid that you kill a child, but it happens :(. No-one goes out with the intention of having an accident. It could happen! Personally I wouldn't drive it. No need to SORN it tho, as stated.

I'm not intentionally driving it though, we seem to have hit moral ground here, i do have to use it for work but i can schedule work so as the use is minimal, if at all.

I didn't think on the insurance side though, good point ;)
