Somethings Not Right!?

As do quite a few others- liner engines should not be turned over without them clamped down.

The experience of a great many on here is the k series engines are highly unreliable and various attempts to improve them have failed.

Bottom line is they are a continuing nightmare
 
Glad to hear it's working again, and I am in the same boat that i like messing about with engines and would rather do the work myself not because of the £50 an hour that garages change but because i want to do it.
People on here can be rather derogatory to the Freelander and it's many issues as well as people who come here asking for help. I for one think that an understanding and open forum brings more contributors and is more worthwhile - some i've seen have excellent tutorials about doing work and sticky threads explaining common faults so that people don't have to keep asking.

We are open and understanding, we understand people do no research before buying-see gaylander petrol models given away and then whine like a bitch when it bites them in the arse.

When something has residual value of **** all-there is a very good reason.
 
Who's whining like, I've asked questions and got some good pointers! I could have bought the TD4 but I said I like petrol engines and they're cheaper to fix when things go wrong. As you have a defender and I a "Freelander" ones a work horse and has done a good job but it's got it's own fault and issues "just like a Freelander" The one I bought wasn't cheap and has been looked after with all the service history, given it's original head gasket has only gone now some 6 years from new I'd say it was OK given it's a K-series. With the upgrades and work shouldn't it last even longer this time???

Because they did an uprated head gasket, metal dowel kit, different web for head bolts.

I know two separate machine shops and both conclude the block and head bolt design are root cause along with a poor cooling system design.

The Gasket taken off is the old type (standard single) they did however start fitting the dowels in the later models which mine has. So would you say that despite the name calling to get 6 years out of the head without any other trouble was OK?

You seem to be looking for reassurance and approval-sequential hgf common and if it got to six years it was luck 40-50k doing well. Seen several sub 40k and numerous at 50k

I understand these Engine let the Freelander down big style "I get it" but if they are that bad why do race teams love them so much, they do all sorts of mods to improve the life and pressure of the whole engine, shame more isn't made public...

I've read a quote from an engineer who works with these engines and he's stated that with the correct attention and alterations this motors will last! And this guy was brought it to work with Lotus.....

Whilst you are correct in stating the tratter boys dont like the Freelander, i think its untrue to say that they dont offer help...quite often the banter is accompanied by advice and knowledge.

As for 'playground insults' this is plainly untrue.

So, liar liar pants on fire.

Since the K Series is well known for having head gasket problems and the TD4 isnt then i suggest that you are far more likely to run up £800 than i am. Yes i bought an ex demonstrator 1.8 on a 54 in 2005, nice car no problems with it but i was waiting for the head gasket to go so i traded it in. I am no expert, you know far more than me, i put a :) at the end of my post, it was meant as a bit of a giraffe. As for mine being gold, what thats got to do with anything beats me, smacks of desperation that one:confused:.
Actually i do feel for you and wish you well in getting it fixed.
 
After checking my own engine I can confirm that the 2004 onwards models have already got the upgraded thermostat it's pre 2003 that require the mod.

The MLS gasket were release late 2005, so Freelanders before that will have the old gaskets which cause some trouble.

I'm going to buy an new oil rail since this to was upgraded 2005, so mine has the old thinner model fitted.
