My Freelander 2001 TD4 burned itself to the ground. The fire started just after start up. I was leaving home when I noticed the acrid smell inside the cab. I pulled over to the side and cut the engine when I saw the smoke coming from the console between the two front seats. It was coming through the button that controls the passenger side window. Flames followed and within less than a minute the fire engulfed the entire cab.The materials inside were far too flammable. My insurance company is sending a forensic expert to try to find the cause. It smelled like electrical. Do you have any ideas? I would like to compare notes

Quality, practicality and equipment WE ARE NOW ON OUR SECOND X-TRAIL WHICH IS NOW THE DIESEL T-SPEC. GREAT CAR, LOVELY TO DRIVE, LOADS OF BOOT SPACE BLAH BLAH...HOWEVER, THE TURBO WENT (SURPRISE SURPRISE) IN JULY. WENT IN TO LOCAL DEALER AND GOT 'FIXED'. THEN GOT A RECALL SAYING WE HAD TO HAVE THE COMPUTER CHANGED AS IT WAS SENDING TOO MUCH POWER TO THE TURBO, HENCE A COMMON PROBLEM ON THE T-SPEC OF THE TURBO'S BLOWING.
SOON AFTER IT RETURNED FROM THE GARAGE WITH ITS NEW COMPUTER WE NOTICED A SERIOUS LACK OF POWER. UNABLE TO OVERTAKE ANYTHING AND SMOKE COMING FROM THE EXHAUST.
IT WAS DUE A SERVICE AS WE HAVE NOW HAD THIS CAR 2 YEARS SO TOOK IT IN FOR A SERVICE AND TO HAVE THIS LOSS OF POWER PROBLEM LOOKED AT.
THAT WAS 3 WEEKS AGO!!!! DESPITE 3 WEEKS OF LOOKING, SWAPPING PARTS WITH A DONOR CAR AND FITTING NEW FUEL INJECTORS, THEY STILL CANNOT FIND WHAT'S WRONG WITH IT!! WE NOW HAVE THE 'NISSAN HI-TECH' DEPARTMENT COMING TO VISIT IT TOMORROW.
WE HAVE BEEN IN TOUCH WITH NISSANS CUSTOMER LINE AND BEEN TOLD THAT ANY EXISTING PROBLEMS WILL STILL BE DEALT WITH BY NISSAN AT NO COST TO OURSELVES AFTER THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED. CALL ME SYNICAL...BUT I WONDER IF THAT IS THE CASE HAVING READ ALL THESE REVIEWS.
IT IS VERY WORRYING AS THE WHOLE POINT OF BUYING OUR BRAND NEW X-TRAIL WAS FOR HASSLE FREE MOTORING!!
OH WELL.....HERE'S HOPING THE HI-TECH NISSAN DEPARTMENT CAN FIX OUR BELOVED CAR....OUR LOCAL DEALERSHIP CERTAINLY COULDN'T!
WONDER IF ANYONE ELSE MAY HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM OUT THERE!!????

And Another!!!!:p :D :D :D

Having spent the past few weeks quietly blaming drivers in front of me for creating the very nasty smell of burning oil, you can imagine my horror to find out it was actually coming from underneath the bonnet of my own 2 year old X-Trail T Spec!!!

Having opened the bonnet and peered inside, surprise surprise, oil dribbling down the front of the engine onto the exhaust pipe.

Quick as you like I contacted the dealer where I bought it, and quick as you like they replied "bring it in for one of our tecky's to check it out". That done, the tecky confirmed that the inter-cooler has indeed got a hole in it, a few photo's (evidence) were taken and a date for the offending part to be replace was booked - in 2 weeks!!!

Isn't this a fire hazard said I, yes said the tecky and even the manufacturer has admitted this, I bet not in writing, thought I.

Anyway I now await to hear whether or not this little episode falls under the still live warranty against my car and I get the replacement free of charge. I look forward to a happy ending, unless that is, it catches fire first.

PS - Tecky also mentioned this was not an uncommon problem, but did say that the new inter-cooler would be the modified version.

Here's hoping.

yer better orf buying used cars.. parts are generally cheaper to get..any teething problems will at this stage be false ones.....all niggles have been well and trully dealt wiff.. like that fault that the dealers can't fix have now got a 5min cure discovered by a one legged old man in a back street garage.

forums are full of people that have had to deal wiff it before, thur ain't any new problem gonna occur that ain't been seen before.....and if the thing is just plain crap the only ones you'll find are in the scrap heap..remember the renault wiff the badly copied auto cutch thing?
