Freelander 1 Some Questions about "B" service

Hi all,

Service time and skint as usual so doing it myself following the attached check sheet but I have a few questions if I may.

The vehicle has a full service history with Jag/ LR Main Dealers or Approved Specialists.

Last service at 88 k miles is ticked as "Oil Service" only.

Last "A" service was at 71 k miles (April 2015).

Last "B" service was at 61 k miles (Dec 2013). "C" service also ticked for this one but I don't know what that is.

All interim services (12-18 months apart) are "Oil service" with either one or both of "Inspection 1" & "Inspection 2" ticked.

Current mileage is 100 k.

So on the attached the stuff in Pink is stuff I've done; the stuff in Green is stuff I need to do; and the stuff in Blue I either don;t know if I need to do it at this stage or have some other query.

8. Check ignition key interlock. does this mean does the ignition work?

22. Renew coolant. Last done 16 months/ 12,000 miles ago. change or not?

27. Renew Fuel Filter. Last done 4 years/ 29,000 miles ago. Change or not?

28. Renew air cleaner. Is there any advantage in a high performance (K & N/ Pipercross/ etc.). There is a huge price difference between those and an aftermarket filter.

33. Check/ top up intermediate reduction drive, gearbox and rear axle oil. Are these simple to do?

45. Check road wheel speed sensor electrical harness for damage. I assume this is a visual check?

47. Replace brake fluid. Last changed 4 years/ 29,000 miles ago. Replace or not?

51, Replace airbag module? Really?

52. replace seat belt pre-tensioners. REally?

There's nothing about the CCV so will check/ replace that but is there anything else that is missing?

I personally do a B service anually, with the addition of the crankcase filter, which isn't even on the service schedule.
I change brake fluid with the pads, which don't last much longer than 3 years.
 
Re gearbox, IRD and Diff - if there's no evidence of oil replacements, it will probably be worth doing. The gearbox and IRD are easy enough - I don't know about the TD4 Getrag, but the Rover PG1 gearbox has drain and fill plugs on the end of the engine/gearbox, the fill plug was definitely accessed from above, the drain one I might have got at from underneath or through wheel arch I forget. Filling I did with a syringe thingie from above. The IRD can only really be accessed from underneath which does make it awkward and the more (safe) space you can get under the car the better. Drain and fill plugs are easily accessible though. Be sure you use a tight fitting 6 sided socket on the fill plug as they round very very easily. Once again I used the syringe to fill.

On both gearbox and IRD, make sure you have loosened the fill plug before loosening the drain plug - in case you can't get the fill plug off.

I'm not really sure how you check and refill the rear diff. IIRC there is only a fill plug, no drain plug. That presumably means you have to suck the fluid out the fill plug, or remove the back plate. Access is easy from the back of the car if the exhaust back box is removed, not sure what its like with the exhaust still in place.

I believe if you go by the manufacturer recommendations, those airbag/SRS modules should be replaced. Whether anyone does or not, I don't know.

I take this to mean the steering lock.

Every 3 years/36,000 miles for me.
27. Renew Fuel Filter. Last done 4 years/ 29,000 miles ago. Change or not?
Best to do it because of the problems it causes. Use a decent one.
28. Renew air cleaner. Is there any advantage in a high performance (K & N/ Pipercross/ etc.). There is a huge price difference between those and an aftermarket filter.
Don’t bother.
33. Check/ top up intermediate reduction drive, gearbox and rear axle oil. Are these simple to do?
Gearbox is a bit tricky, but all do-able. Go to commaoils.com to check types.
45. Check road wheel speed sensor electrical harness for damage. I assume this is a visual check?
Yes.
47. Replace brake fluid. Last changed 4 years/ 29,000 miles ago. Replace or not?
Yes.
51, Replace airbag module? Really?
No.
52. replace seat belt pre-tensioners. REally?
No.

No. I think it's referring to the auto box interlock, which isn't fitted to the vehicle in all markets, including the UK.

Only every 3 to 5 years, unless it's been topped with plain water.

Renew Fuel Filter. Last done 4 years/ 29,000 miles ago. Change or not?
I'd change it, but it's not necessary.

Yes. And no.

Use paper, but I remove the fluffy outer cover.

I'd replace the oil.
Yes, but always make sure you loosen the filler plug, before removing the drain plug.

Yes. Check for wear and chaffing

Should be replaced at 3 year intervals.
Replace airbag module? Really?
It's only to ensure they deploy when needed.

As above.

I just had a quick tot up and I think I'm at £ 124 for fluids and parts plus a Saturday running through it all.

Point about removing filler plugs before drain plugs duly noted!!
