The last while, i have noticed my engine oil light coming on and staying on for periods of time, i must admit, i seem to be topping up a bit more regular than normal,(its only done 65000 miles) although no visible leaks, except a very ill fitting oil filler cap, the second one ive had.
This has coincided with my steering becoming at times, heavier than normal, the fluid level is fine in the reservoir.

Its like having a lack of air in the tryes, but they are fine, new and pumped up.

Any ideas please/

Landrover 110 1991 2.4 diesel.
Thanks steve

Land rovers like oil, if the lights coming on you need to sort it quick. How long is 'periods of time'?

There's a valve in the filter head that might be sticking, take it out and see if it's scored or full of ****, but to be honest if it is that just change the filter head, coz yer gona lose yer engine.

Doubt it's the oil pump, when hot at idle it would probably show a flickering oil light, unless you have lost part of the pick up in the sump and the light comes on at a certain angle.

And of course you need to check out the switch, and wiring. Pressure tester job, you can get an adapter to allow you to have both connected at the same time, so when the light goes out, check the pressure.

Sorry. it is always on when i start up in morning, then after a minite or so, goes off, then as one poster says, it flickers on/off as well.
Thanks for your reply

The oil light means LOW oil pressure so sort it asap otherwise you'll be looking at a bigger bill.

Have you checked ya pressure relief valve, that maybe stuck.

I have noticed my Oil Light stays on a bit longer when starting in the morning (Maybe 2-3 seconds) I'm sure it used to go out almost straight away.
Doesn't flicker, and goes out quicker when warm.

I am a bit paranoid that I am turning my oil to cottage cheese as I'm running 50/50 veg ( I read too much stuff that mentions Polymer Pollema, Pooleig........nackering ya oil)

I am no engineer, but assume that oil pressure takes a few seconds to build, or should it be almost instant as soon as the oil pump spins?

Some education from a hexpert would be nice.

Oh and I did do a search.......but found no threads that mentioned 'Lubrication systems for Dummies'

Stick an oil pressure tester on it like ah told yah and stop fooking about, cos yel soon find out if the oil pressure if naff when yer enjun stops turning after a sudin rattly sound. yel get big end and main bearing education then, so ye will.

What did the oil lights do on your other cars,??? after an oil change wif filter yes, normal no. Three seconds, fook me I would have a panic attack if mine took that time every day.

Old Rover V8 I had in a TR7 used to be similar, I've not paid much attention of late as I've been driving company cars for the last few years,
You've scared the S*** out of me now though.......
Best check the pressure, as I spose that's the only way of knowing for sure, by the time the lights on full time it'll be too late.
