I think things are looking a lot better for him, I think that he needs to find the stamped VIN, then he can relax. I imagine he is out there now polishing 20 years of crud off the chassis.

I'm struggling to understand how a late 90 that has a 200tdi only 20 years of crud and a 300tdi conversion ?
if its a late 90 it has to be 1990 so should have 27 years of crud. I suspect you will find it might have started life as a TD,

It is 1990, and did start life as a 90 TD and now has a 300tdi from a disco

Can you let us know the name of the 4x4 specialist you went to, I for one will not be visiting them if they cannot find an engine number will be interesting what you find for a chassis number.

Cheers
Everything was quite rushed, they 100% said the chassis number had been removed but there was a bit of a debate regarding the engine nr as it really was hard to see. I also must add that I turned up at 11:00 on a Saturday morning and they dropped everything to inspect the truck for me straight away after finding the problem with steering box.

He also wrote me a letter with his full inspection on to send to the pre-purchase inspector, and we've spoken on the phone twice to discuss options. I'd be lying if said these guys didn't seem genuinely concerned/interest for my best interests in this situation.

The chassis number quite often can be under a layer or tow of paint and rust.

Even a good application of a wire brush and cleaner can still leave it obscured.

Cheers
