Just got my l322 (4.4l petrol 04 with 78k miles) from the garage after a quick check for an Oil leak and sitting here pondering on how much this beast has cost me in the 3 months of ownership (the garage informs me that the leak appears to be from the gearbox - transfer box seal - about 5 hours labour plus the seal). Previous car was a Saab 9-5 Aero that took me 123k miles and cost a total of £500 in parts give or take a few pence - obviously a yearly service is not included ( less than £70 for a short service which was all she ever got) nor tyres at anything between £60 and £100 each every 15-20k miles. So lets start the list.....XYZ switch £593, Window Master switch £250, Oil/Filter/Air Filter plus labour £100, Sun Visor clip £20 from an on line breaker (cheaper to buy the whole visor and throw away everything except the clip), Oil Filer Mounting Rubbers £10, replacement suspension compressor £307 and finally replacement Windscreen Wipers inc replacing the original fittings that fell to pieces £48. £1300 in 3 months OMG but I still love the thing:(
 
XYZ switch and window switch, that's new cost I hope! 30 year guarantee with an invite to the xmas do where they rape you again, mercilessly.
Did you not try a scrappy?

The record on here is an unfortunate fellow who shall remain nameless, he was up to 13k in 7 months, with a broken engine for his efforts.

You can't buy a range rover and expect it to be cheap to run.

Hence the first line of my signature ;) As someone said recently the L322 is now at a price where anyone can buy one, the problem is, once bought not everyone can afford the running costs. Give it another year or so and the market is going to be flooded with cheap L322s that have owner caused problems, rather than inbuilt green oval problems :(
 
you love em or hate em. my wife happens to be like me she wouldnt drive anything else. but now find myself coming round to selling one of mine now. not happy to see one go after doing so much to her. so my l322 02 has to go. luckily who ever gets her only has to put gas and a little petrol in and go. its a toss up weather i keep the 06 plate or 02 because the 02 has had everything done the 06 has nothing done yet.I want to keep the 02 the wife said 06 because she has the reverse cameras aswell as tv,s in the back. what do i do.i wownt see any of the bloody cash anyway. its for UNI bills ive spent 4 grand over 2 years on the blue 02 i didnt mind i love the fixing part of having them. it drives better than the 07 jag engine imhi. i had gearbox rebuilt on the 02 £2000 so thats years of use yet. well spent money. talk about spending money its not nice spending. but when you really love range rovers it has to be done. i have a 87 classic its my fav. its all the memories as well as it never ever lets me down and i can fix it easy.i will have so much joy rebuilding it this year. ive bought just about a new classic in parts last year this year ill put it togeather. normally when buying a RR expect a couple of grand for the first 2 years matey. it does get better honest

Personally, I'd keep the 02. Firstly because you have spent more on it, so most of big problems are probably/possibly fixed. The 06 is worth a little more on the market and it's problems are probably just starting, so you'll need to start all the big jobs soon.
Remind the wife that there are things called mirrors and if she needs a camera to reverse, maybe it's time to hand back her licence ;) As for the screens in the back, nothing the kids/grandkids can't live without. Especially as they all have their own tablets these days. Bloody first world problems!

XYZ switch was new but the Window Master switch is from Evilbay and includes fitting - forgot to mention the Cam Cover Gaskets - another £120 with fitting. When I first enquired about the XYZ I was quoted £475 ish and reliably informed that a new genuine unit was the best way to go - when I went to pick her up the garage said that they had forgotten to add VAT but that they had fitted a pattern part to keep the bill down to £593. - no more business from me then :mad:
 
Not a bad idea holidaychicken - used to work in a breakers yard and trained as a precision engineer as well as a service engineer for recycling machinery, but psoriatic arthritis, 2 organ transplants and heart failure make me reluctant to renew my relationship with most things mechanical :(.

My reluctance to get dirt under my nails, is what stops me ;)

Damn it, that's not good, you will be fine as long as you have the bank balance of Kuwait then :)
