So after driving 30 seconds and bearding a new knock I noticed this ... the pin was put the hole so I pulled the shock down into the hole just so I could Limp home...shock must be so shot the fact it compressed and stayed like it and I extended it by pulling lol....( rear shock )

Shocks will stay where you leave them and can be compressed/extended by hand. However I reckon you have f all chance of getting that nut off without sacrificing that shock
 
I’m going to just order new pair...and recommendations just for standard use...was just going to get some from britpart at £15 each
 
I’ve said numerous times before the cheap britpart ones have been spot on for my D1. At worst you’ve wasted £30 if you upgrade later, I’ve not felt the need though.
 
I bought an entire suspension kit from jgs4x4, think that's mainly Britpart stuff. Ordered a service kit from them, then received a 10% discount code so instead of it being £190 odd, it came to £172ish. That was 4 springs, shocks, new seats, retaining plates, and front turrets. Everything to replace the 4 corners.

Not got round to having it installed yet.
 
I ran round for 3 yrs on the cheap britpart shocks. Worked brilliant at absolutely everything. Only changed them because I lifted it and put hd stuff on due to bigger tyres, roof racks, winches etc

Yeah the guy I got it from didn’t really do much....iv been waiting till the summer really to get it washed underneath and have a good look....so just patching issues as I go atm
 
20min job now both changed

So today a new knocking....pulled over after a few seconds only to see the front top shock sticking through the plastic cover in the engine bay........and when I grab the turret from in the arch I can rock it quite a lot......more tinkering! It’s all good tho

If the front shock turret is moving I would expect to need to replace the turret retaining ring to repair it as these have a habit of rusting away. Not difficult to do but you need to drop/remove the spring to get to it. If this is the problem it may be worth considering the HD turret rings which are made of thicker steel so take longer to rust away.
You then have to ask is if you are going to all that effort is it worth replacing the worn shocks and fitting shiny new galvanised turrets at the same time as neither are to expensive. The problem is with enough not to expensive parts you soon get to an expensive bill overall!
