So I've bought one, now what?

After much deliberation I have just ordered a new Freelander XS SD4 for delivery next month. I have a question and hope someone can give me an idea.
The car will come with LR own Satnav and that's fine, never had a built in satnav before but I guess it will do the job, however, as I understand it I will not be able to download the safety camera database to it as I do now with my TomTom.

Is there an alternative? I don't want to use my current TT unit just for cameras, taking it out of the car every time I stop is a pain, but I do need camera warnings. Is there a simple way I can get reliable safety camera warnings without using a detachable sat nav?

Any idea's please.

Just a suggestion, but why not try driving within the speed limit for the benefit of you and everyone else?

What a stupid answer.

I have an Origin B2. I think they've replaced it with something newer now but I really rate it.

I very much doubt anybody on this forum can honestly say they never break the speed limit.

I would rather spend my time looking where I'm going than driving with one eye on the speedo and one eye looking for the cameras.

Even that stats show that people with camera warning systems in the car have less accidents than those that do............so having one could be deemed more responsible than not having one.

I didn't want to start a fight here but it is if not a stupid answer it's really not helpful.
Firstly I think it very unlikely that there are many who use this forum or drive even could, hand on heart, say they NEVER exceed the speed limit. It may not even be by choice, speed limits change, and in the West Midlands they change a lot. One day 60 next 50. I have been caught out once when driving on what was a 40mph road which has changed, after many years as a 40, to 30. I don't want to speed, I don't need to speed, but I don't want to be caught again either, so I need camera warnings.
As for benefiting everyone else one could argue that driving a Land Rover is not particularly world friendly, maybe, if you own a Land Rover, you could change to a Prius.

Thanks Steve, Nice to have a helpful answer.
I have taken a look at their site and will go deeper later. A bit pricey, cost more than a full Sat Nav unit which is odd. But it is a lot smaller and will fit my pocket more easily, so we'll see.

Most counties are starting to turn off their speed cameras now as funding is being withdrawn so feel free to drive as fast as you like, never mind the kids and coffin dodgers in your way.

Hi Ray
Not trying to start a fight or intending to sound particularly stupid, but I happen to believe that it is every drivers responsibility to drive within the speed limit for the benefit of themselves (their own safety) and for the benefit of others (other peoples safety).

Your post read to me as though you did intend to speed and wished to be warned of cameras in advance to further that aim, which prompted my response. I did say it was just a suggestion, though

your a poor driver if ya cant read the road signs.

Have a nosey at the INFORAD that is sold in Halfords (circa £50). It has the Pocket GPS World POI database on it (updated weekly) that is probably one of the best databases around. The unit is very small and so am sure a wee space could be found for it that isnt too too obvious

I partly agree with this. I do accidentally break the speed limit because I am watching the road and not the instruments. It happens and I'm not perfect. But when it does happen and I spot it then I correct it back to the limit. I do not deliberately speed. Anyone with any sense will see that driving fast does not actually gain you any useful time, but does increase your risk of an accident, increases your fuel consumption and maybe even being nicked for it. I do enjoy it when I'm passed by some tosser at stupid speed, only to catch up with them when the road conditions restricts them later on.

Rather than having a speed camera warning, it is far more valuable to have a sat nav that knows the speed limits and warns you if you are breaking them, just as my Navman does. If you don't break the speed limit then who cares about cameras? I don't.

I Use the built in warning system on the Tom Tom which shows me the current speed limit on each stretch of road and pings if I go 3 miles per hour + over that speed limit.

I've also got the speed cameras on my tom Tom as points of interest using the pocketgpsworld database Pocket GPS World - SatNavs | GPS | Speed Cameras

Both systems mean I keep my arse out of trouble with the law and don't have to keep an eye particularly glued to the speedo.

Speeding is one of those things where people who do it will defend their ability to speed to the death, similarly those who don't will sport a halo and preach. I particularly try not to speed, and would rather not give any more money to this robbing government so I have systems in place to prompt me when I may be going astray.

Firstly, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Secondly, there's nothing wrong with his reading, it's his writing you are criticising.

Thirdly, you neglected to insert the ' at the end of your quotation and 'good bye' is one word not two. So if you are going to be sanctimonious, at least do it correctly.

Look, I am not the sort of driver who speeds, I'm 65, been retired 7years who is quite happy to potter around with no need to rush. But I am honest enough to say that it is not impossible for me to stray over the limit by accident, it happens. I find camera warnings helpful if only to check I am within the Law.
I already own a Tom Tom device with Pockel GPS camera downloads and that is fine, been using it for a number of years. But the car that is being delivered in a couple of weeks has Sat Nav built in, so I don't want to lug the TT around just for cameras, I'm looking for something smaller and less intrusive, that's all. But I have been amazed how many self-righteous LR owners there seem to be.
Need to close now, the schools are about to open and I have to knock down a few kids as they cross the road.

i read the op a few daze ago.seems youve got yourself a freelander2,good for you.
dont worry about map upgrades,the older roads are usually less cogested,you have the perfect vehicle for less than perfect road surfaces.
please let us know how your getting on with your fl2.all us gaylanderers would love to hear how its going.

why not just get a road angel or something similar if you are so worried about cameras?
