So... I was driving to work this morning when this happened...

under 30, something wasn't right, i was reducing speed and listening out to try and work out what was happening, it still through me all over the road a fair bit and of course the breaks did f**k all, but, it didn't come all the way out (by a few mm) so it could have done a lot more damage.

but...yes... scary as!

.........or was it the most catastrophic wheel bearing failure in history? I did once see a rear wheel and driveshaft lying in a layby, closely followed by an old Ford (Cortina) with a suspicious lean to one side at the back!

Seems to be the cone shaped bit of metal which holds the bearing in has failed... if that makes sense to anyone? I need to look up my exploded diagrams of the axle to understand what is meant to happen compared to what has happened - but the wheel bearing nut is well and truly still fastened on!

bearing failure.
outer race come over top of inner race due to lack of rollers.
had this on a 109 salisbury, pita at side of road as it chewed the end of the stub threads and couldnt get the locknuts back on.
as you say, no brakes. engine braking only in 4wd.
bonus with caliper brakes, they stop it falling all the way out!
brown trouser moment?

Yup, 109" salisbury axle... Common problem?

Doesn't look like any other damage for me so ordered new bearings from lrdirect.

Strangley I'm used to spinning / rolling / tipping various cars now so it was more of a "here we go again" monent than a ahh s**t moment

you must have noticed poor bearings previously ,its quite rare for the bearings to get that bad that wheel comes off as is usualy noticed ,but running through muddy water will severely shorten life unless cleaned regular,no axles are prone anymore than any other

no warnings with mine that i remember (15 year or ago now)
was about 11 oclock at night on addingham bypass, straight road, empty, (fortunately)
about 40 mph and tbh i thought it had jumped out of gear.
coasted to side of road while checking gears and transfer box, no joy so assumed
i'd done a halfshaft.
until i got out!
nearside on mine too. nowt left of bearings internals, but no muck either. just oily.
could only put it down to complete bearing failure.
woulda been a right **** if happened on a hill!

another unrelated thing to bear in mind, mate bust a rear halfshaft on a hill, had freewheeling hubs unlocked. handbrake useless then so had to wait 3 hour for recovery with foot on brake cos he couldnt get out to find a wheel chock!

Happenex to me in a transit few years back. Recovery truck driver **** himelf when he saw it. Wheel had come out about 4inches. wasnt bad on a 20k mile 1 year old van

I checked all the wheel bearings when i put the axle on and they were all checked at the MOT just before Christmas... i'll be honest, they hadn't been done since then... But, there was no warning, day before it was driving perfectly... out in the snow it drove perfectly... then this.
