Hey all,
I wanna know the best place to get a snorkel for my 1979 series 3 and have tried ebay but there is'nt much about. New or second hand is fine. I know a few people do make their own but i don't fancy that unless i really have to. Any advise would be great. Thanks

how deep are you planning on getting your landy into water ??

i had my 88" thru a ford the other day and the water was just up to the top of my headlights in the very deepest bit, obviously if i'd stopped moving i could have been in deep trouble with the water getting up into the engine bay ...

you could say it was worrying :screaming_bug_eye_f

Do it the military way This is in a 2.5NA diesel fitted to a mod 90 but the principle is the same.

I don't think it's possible to buy a proper raised air intake system off the shelf for a series Land-Rover. You can get the actual snorkle and pipework, but the pipework will not fit onto the oil bath air filter. There was a genuine Land-Rover oil bath air filter which was designed to work with a snorkle, but I think they are very rare. It is possible to convert a standard air filter, but good welding skills (very thin metal) and a lot of patience are needed.

the proper MOD filter housings are around but rare as rocking horse ****, i sold one to someone on here jast year, dunno where you would find another

if you want to cut the cost's right down, make your own snorkle out of drain pipe, just buy the mushroom for the top and make the rest from black drain pipe, doesn't look that different and far cheeper.

I wonder if the airfilter/box from a 200tdi would solve the problem?

Thats what I've done on my SIII 200Tdi conversion. A 200Tdi filter housing still needs some work to make it waterproof though. The construction of the filter housing is thin spotwelded steel, so the joints are not watertight - I seam welded all the joints. Also the endcap which retains the paper element is not sealed against the main body of the housing - I used silicone sealer on this. There is also a special rubber nipple attached to these filters which is supposed to seal when the engine is running, but open when the engine is switched off in order to drain out any water which has got into the filter housing. These nipples do not close off completely especially at low engine revs so they could allow water in - I've sealed mine up.

i'm using the airbox off a 90/RRC on my 200tdi conversion, i've got it sitting vertically on the timing cover by removing the 3 legs and using the disco airbox mounting clamps (along with the plastic connector/adaptor) and making my own legs out of a couple of straps of 3mm steel to bolt it down ...

you need the disco connector to minimise the overall height (rubber tube cut down for reducer ring) and have connected it to the original 2.25 airpipe with another reducer and the just pushed it tightly into the disco turbo intake pipe ...

all sounds complicated but it really isn't if you've the bits in front of you...

all i've got to do now is make the snorkel and attach it to the airbox which will be easy as the 90 one has three clamps round the middle of the body which allow you to rotate the top to any required position

On a similar vein....

What would the best route to the back of the Landie be for a snorkle pipe?

Given that I have a pick-up it would make more sense to have the snorkle come out behind the cab - as it will get less dust thrown up in the summer, etc.
I would assume run down out of the engine bay, along by the gear box and up again? Or through the cab. Or maybe its just too much hassle and i wont bother!

can't see the point of extending it to the back, it'll have a filter in the run so what's the issue with dust ?

Just make sure you put a mushroom top on it and it wont take in anywhere near as much dust as a safari one
