I have just fitted a snorkel to my landy 110 TD5 but am wondering if I should have done it correctly. The snorkel has been fitted to the side vent on the right hand side and I have used silicon to seal it air tight. Should I have connected any pipes within the engine bay? I have just watched this video on youtube and it now has me thinking I haven't done it correctly as they use a flexible pipe within the engine bay. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am a complete retard when it comes to anything slightly mechanical.

What I did to check was remove the top from the snorkel and start the engine. I then put my hand over the top of the snorkel. You will see the intake hoses collapse and should be able to hear any leaks (if there are any).

Before you do go wading the thing that limits the TD5 the most is the ECU under your bum that is in a non-watertight box!

Don't go deeper than that or you will fry/damage your ECU.

Extending the breathers can be a good idea, but if you look to the rear of the engine you will see 3 pipes that are bent over - Front Axle, Gearbox and Tx Box IIRC and there is one for the Fuel tank under the rear right wheel arch and rear Axle.

I went this deep:

and nearly contaminated my ecu. It left a a "tide mark" about 2 inches below the ECU in the Box under the Drivers seat.

Think logically about this, what does a snorkel do?

It extends the place where the ENGINE takes air into it!!

As I read it all you have done is bolted it to the side of the vehicle, so if you were to drop a ball down from the top of it then the ball would just roll out from the bottom!!!

Identify where you air filter is, that is where the engine gets its air from, your snorkel must be attached to that with the complete system sealed from the filter unit to the top of the snorkel.

If you have honestly just bolted it to the wing and not connected it into the system then in my humble opinion, I reckon you should pick up your driving licence, put it in an envelope and write a covering letter explaining to the DVLA that you shouldn't have a licence and send it to them, then sell the vehicle and use your legs!

Do you have a stamp that I could possibly borrow?

What should I use to attach the snorkel to the air filter? The kit didn't come with anything. I'm guessing some type of flexible hose.

Cheers Bear, why the **** didn't the kit come with all the required parts in the first place, I know I'm mechanically retarded but things like this don't help lol. I will get the hose ordered ASAP. Cheers again to you all for your valuable input.

This is a TD5 set up .

Valuable Input? Would be better if they had a clue! You have done it correctly.

The vent on the side of the wing, is the engine air intake FFS! There is a moulding on the inner wing, with a pipe going to the air intake the from the air intake to the inlet manifold.

Every single Defender with a Turbo Engine in it from Standard has this setup! 19J and 200TDi on the N/S and 300TDi's, TD5's and Puma's on the O/S.

To test you have made a air tight seal beetween the Snorkel and the wing, put a plastic bag over the Snorkel.

What he said ^^^ When I fitted the safari snork to me 19J TD injun. All I did was make sure the intake pipe behind the outer wing, was siliconted to the outer wing and then fitted the snorkel where the intake grill used to be. Eveyrthing else is already connected.

Ignore CrazyMac. I think he's trying to live upto his username. Or maybe he shud change it to Ficcko???

Did I say he'd done it wrong??? No I didn't.

I told him to identify his air filter and make sure that it was connected through to the snorkel.

Errrm I think yu did!!

Cheers M series and Redhand, I should have waited for reliable hands like yourselves, it would have saved me ordering £30 of flex hose and jubilee clips that I don't actually need.

And thats me saying "you did it wrong"?? Don't be ****in daft!! The original poster wrote that all he had done was bolt it to the side and seal it, he was the one thinking he had done it wrong. If he had then come on and said, "no, if I drop a ball down then it will head into the engine bay towards the air filter" then I would be with others saying that it sounds like he has done it right!!

:whoosh: :blah::blah::blah::blah::blah::blah:
