I am now looking at a snorkel, and quite fancy the Southdown, but as I have a 2nd battery fitted and abs, not a lot of room, so have searched about and it looks like people put on a 200 tdi air box as a solution.

However, has anybody just whacked on the top of the snorkel a cone filter (like a K&N, Pipercross etc) as I have one of these sat in my garage, so thought it would be a cheaper/different alternative to ditch the standard air box completely and have the filter on top of the snorkel - a bit like this, although I would have it lower so it doesn't go above the roof line to hopefully protect it a bit more:-

Any thoughts?
 
You could do this, but the filter will be exposed to more potential damage and likely to clog up quicker. I would also be concerned about exposure to water.

imho if your gonna fit a snorkel im assuming its not for cosmetic purposes and will be used? then get the correct kit whats the cost of a snorkel compared to a knackerd engine when you find a joint or seal has failed and water got in,or in heavy rain the filter like the one in the pic becomes water soaked or let water in.

my opinion agree with it or not some things you can scrape together some things its worth spending the money on

Don't get me wrong, I am looking at buying the southdown snorkel, but just wondered if there are any pros/cons to ditching the original air box with a filter on top of the snorkel. As this in my opinion gives less to leak ;)
 
Well, been looking into this further, and going to ditch the idea of a filter exposed on top of the snorkel, and have come with the idea of fitting one of these....

As then I can remove my current air box, put on one of these and then hose it direct to the snorkel.

Will save me buying a new air box, as I have hacked mine to bits when fitting the second battery to allow more air in (not much room now esp with ABS).....any thoughts....

Seems like it is easier to get hold of rocking horse poo than a 200 snorkel for decent money....as that was my initial plan, till I saw they were fetching £40 odd plus p&p.....so thought of this idea, as then at least I know its all new, and clean etc...
 
I see what you mean mate. I have been thinking about a snorkel for my disco but as i want a second battery with splitcharge there won't be too much room left with the abs unit fitted.
So i'll be watching this thread to see how you do it!

I just picked up a 200 air filter for £25 quid, cheeper then the one that you posted for £45, just keep your eyes open, on ebay, post in other forums, and ask mates , someone will have one
 
Well, finally got round to sorting out my air box, given the lack of room with fitting the second battery.

So got a forced cold air filter (as couldn't find any decent 200 air boxes) and went from this...

Just need to get some steel tubing now to make the 'snorkel' part, and jobs a good one :D
 
that looks fantastic and exactly what I need!!

Questions... what is the make, model & part number for the air filter you bought and how much did it cost?

How easy is that particular air filter to maintain/clean etc...?

Finally, what is a "forced" cold air filter? How does it differ from a normal 200Tdi filter?
 
This looks great...exactly what I have in mind for mine. Although its 3.9 V8, would that filter setup be ok do you think or could I have running issues with the forced air and "RAM" effect from a safari snorkel???

Was little room with abs and 2nd battery, so that's why I came up with this idea, as safari snorkels for abs are hard to find plus a shed load of money :eek:

As for the difference, the filter is a performance cone filter, so like the k&n etc type, so just need to oil and clean it now and then. Never bought it for 'performance' as after all its a disco :rolleyes: and no real point paying a hundred odd pounds for the real top end stuff, as again its a 'disco' so no real huge benefits from it, but will run better on a direct cold air feed, regardless what car or engine, as old school rules, cold air is dense, so more air in, better explosion, and cos its an enclosed system it suits my needs better (joys of years of tuning cars so tend to know what is out there).

Just need a steel pipe like this one...

Will then cut and weld it to get the right angle I need, then just whack on a mushroom top and jobs done....diy snorkel :D

So......I could take the go-faster cone filter that I have already laying around waiting for a use , sikaflex it into a piece of pipe with reducers at both ends to the diameter of the air hose ....result ! I was holding off putting a second battery into Link as with abs et al things were a bit tight .

This way I could make a new inner wing hole for air inlet as per standard arrangement rather than have the cone filter picking up hot air in the engine well , which is the arrangement on Kart . Exxxxcellent (in best Mr Burns voice)
