Snapped my exhaust today

OK went to stoke today for the pay and play, great day had appart from my exhaust getting ripped off, its gone right back to turbo, However I do like the noise and the truck seems more powerful so I got to thinking (very rare occasion!!!!) I could modify the exhaust to come out front wing, but is this likely to allow water to easily be sucked back into engine seen as there will be less pipe to create a back pressure?????????????

firstly that will mean it will fail its MOT (depending on wat engine u have)....wat enigne u have??
the best thing to do in terms of custom exhausts is either have it coming out of the back wing...look at pic of disco. or have it coming from some where else towards the back like behind the passengers door.
in terms of water coming in as long as the engine is turning over water shouldnt get in but just dnt stall and keep the reves up a bit!

Seen several Landys with Tractor exhausts coming out of the top of the wing.

cous if its an engine that has a catalytic converter on the exhaust (200tdi onwards...) then if that is removed it will fail its MOT. the 2.5td does not have one.

i may be wrong but from what i have heard and eperience with other vehicles.

Diesels dont have "cats" they have particulate filters and they dont alter the tested gases in an mot test. There are a lot of people who have removed theres on here (300tdi) that have gone straight through an mot with out any emision problems.

Its a 200tdi, sounds awesome without the exhaust and yet surprisingly bearable when on a run.

on my last mot mine had a big hole in the exhaust, so i went to the mot station and asked if i put a decat pipe on will it fail an mot
my answer was 'where have you heard that **** from' then he explained that it won't alter the emmissions on a large diesel engine but would be a definite fail on a petrol engine

o right must b getting confused.
geof...go mental with exhaust...post pictures up and let us see what u do

The MOT regs state...

"a silencer in such condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition."

So if your exhaust is much louder than standard, it should fail the MOT.

Just because it gets through an MOT does not mean its legal to be on the road. There are also also EEC directives for db levels and manafacturing standards (Regulations 54, 55 & 55a) which state that your exhaust has to comply with the relevant standards and has to have a type stamp on it. So a home brew exhaust will not comply with that. But, not many police officers know about the regulations in the first place, and if they do, it is unlikley they are going to crawl around your Land Rover looking for type stamps. (p.s doesn't apply to vehicles registered before 1st october 1983)

Taken from the testers manual...

"1.a. A part of the system missing or excessively deteriorated"

If a cat was removed, even if it was replaced with something different, that could be deemed as "part of the system missing" perhaps?

If particulate filter remover and a straight pipe fitted the mot tester has to know 100% that it rolled out the factory with one fitted before he can say its missing so I think were all safe.

OK, well was chatting with the guy who MoTs the buses at the job I was on today, seems I may fail an MoT if I come through the front wing as the fumes could come through an open window too easily.
So I have opted to be safe and exit it out the rear quarter.

ive got a 200tdi in my series the exhaust exits under bulkhead on n/s and is only 2 foot long and has no silencers mot testers do not like it so u would av to put some kind of silencer in to keep on their right side. did over a 100 miles in it saturday and wasnt too bad for noise either and ive only got 4 gears

Yeah, as awesome as they sound without a baffle the MOT people don't tend to like it.
