Brought home a 2006 TD4 on my new tippy trailer today. Original report was blown turbo and much oily smoke. Garage put on a brand new turbo and no improvement so I bought it.

Again, too good to break and so found the pcv valve and filter and ducts in the cover absolutely blocked solid. Cleaned and fitted a spare filter less mod kit that I had.

Starts, runs, all fault codes clear ok.

Car smokes at anything other than tick over. Looks like exhaust is full of oil. Drove out of drive on tick over and wellied it. Looked like a James Bond smoke screen!

Any ideas how to prove it is or isn't fixed ? Wondered whether to remove exhaust and take it out? Have noted oil level, if not down after a run then that would give a clue that all is well.

Bought it for the 4x4 IRD and the new turbo !! Was going to put the IRD and prop on my recently aquire HSE and flog it on, but want to diagnose this one first. It is a much better shell. Not a mark on it externally.

Ideas please, or other tests to do to see if not is anything else.

Thanks...

Here it is pulled by the ever trusty ! Early morning on Exmoor.

If the exhaust is full of oil, it'll need to be changed or the oil allowed to burn out, which will take some time.

I suspect that the blocked breather has caused turbo failure, although I'm still in the dark as to how it can, but apparently it's a real thing.
No point in pulling the glow plugs, as they will be black with diesel soot.

my impression .. were that the higher crankcase pressure,
would cause restricted flow from the turbo oil return, into the sump.
which possibly would restrict the oil flow around the turbo bearings.

Its a good hypothesis, but would that pressure not equal itself out - ie it would also push the oil through the turbo?

If the oil flow is restrictued by pressure though, would that put undue stress on the oil pump and possibly cause that to fail?

Or just the high pressure build up that blows turbo seals ?

Thinking of parking it out the way and leaving it ticking over. Or exhaust off and stood up for a few days.

ENGINE BREATHERS
Oil leaks in the turbocharger may also, be the result of problems in the crankcase ventilation system. The vent or breather line may sometimes become clogged or restricted through engine operation. These conditions allow positive pressure to build up in the crankcase and restrict the oil from flowing down the drain hose and into the crank- case. This will cause oil to back up into the bearing housing and leak past the piston ring type seals.

i.e. unless the m47r turbo oil flow route is different to the above ..

So back to smokey Joe. Having cleaned and put a BMW type pcv separator in and unstuck the pcv and pathways it was impossible to know if it was fixed and just oily exhaust or not fixed.
I had no idea how long the car had been faulty or what volume of oil was in exhaust

So, took exhaust off. Well disconnected and tied out of way. Drove round and round a field. No smoke.

Reconnected exhaust, back to field not near any animals or anyone really. Let it smoke a bit. It cleared and then everytime I drove and bumped it around off it want again. Figured it must be a rear silencer with oil sloshing problem.

Removed rear silencer which was rusty anyway. No smoke. Drove up and down track. Much more responsive without blocked up rear silencer. The rear silencer would smoke for ages after switch off so was maybe lighting it up ?!?!

Only thing it does now is when revved hard off load, if farts every so often and a puff of black smoke. Maybe the MAF is a bit dirty or the intercooler is cleaning itself??

Will clean up the engine key items and take for a run but it does appear to have been the pcv even though pressure in dipstick and cap were not noticeably high.
Hope it is that easy !??!
Will never know if the original turbo was gone or not sadly.

So new tail silencer on order. Vehicle seems fine. Slight hissing (more than my others) when turbo kicks in. Will check pipes and intercooler.

Done other things to it today. Replaced broken tailgate lock. Replaced bonnet pull cable. Washed it inside and out.

There is not a mark on any body panels except a scratch on bonnet.

Got to decide what to do now. MoT and sell on. Put all the HSE goodies on and keep. Problems problems.....
