i changed my glowplugs and checked they were working.
made no odds - i also changed the pump diaphram and check the bleed offs to make sure i wasnt getting bleed back.
had to pre heat two or three times to stand any chance of it starting on a cold morning in winter. and even then it would crank like an old lister you could almost hear each cylinder catching and it would run up to speed with a delay in the accelerator response initially as you say.
In the end i put the engine under a tarp at the end of the garden and fitted a 200tdi and never looked back - even if its not original.

if my battery was worn there is no way my TD would have started .
had to turn it so long in the cold I'm surprised the starter switch didnt burn out - hence the whole street getting smoked up.
It was also a tractor battery the size of the entire under seat area - i suspect the previous owner knew the engine was banjo

I recently changed all my valve guide seals when I had the head off - fitted genuine items - didn't make the slightest difference. I wonder if reconditioned injectors would reduce the puff of smoke at start up? Having said that I can't really complain, the 200TDi starts on the first revolution and runs cleanly once it's warm.

a td is indirect injection they do need more heat from glow plugs and heat warming the cylinder and hot spot to run clean

You could have the biggest battery ever made in the whole entire world, if it is earthed through a layer of rust or if the terminals are corroded, the wiring has corroded or your glow plug relay has worn then the plugs wont get the amps they need to operate efficiently. Simply changing an old glow plug relay can make a difference to the plugs performance. A 19j will start on a worn battery, they just dont like it and will run like a bag of spanners for a while before they pick up.

Well that is factually correct but not what was going on with my motors . All the eggs were sucked prior to changing the motor.
A compression test and subsequent strip down showed it to be in poor health .
