Hi ya,

I have an old Series 2 with a 2.0 diesel (not the 2.25) and the old boy has started to puff a bit out of his dipstick. I am a little concerned that this would be a piston ring or something of that nature.

The engine was rebuilt about 6 years ago by a specialist, but he is used often on the farm for the proper duties of a land rover, not spared a good life of work dispite his age. :D,

In terms of running, he runs fine, slow as usual, dark and smokey on cold start (but that has always been the case). Not much smoke on warm idling, though he still puffs lighter smoke. When hot, starts almost before you turn the key.

I had some issues with leaky freeze plugs a while back and also a leaky radiator, replaced the freeze plugs and the radiator. Water levels stays normal, no overheating and no major issues on oil consumption.

Just wondering if you have any thoughts on it. I honestly would not have even noticed any differences, had it not been the puffy dipstick. Let's say they are not the most refined diesels :D.

Thanks all!

I had the 2 litre, nursed it on for a years or two then binned it.
They like to crack the cyl head, liners like to leak from the tell tales.
If it is puffing out of the dipstick it might mean it needs another rebuild, does not take much to pressurise the crankcase.
Are you still running a stat?

Do you mean puffing with dip stick out or does it blow the stick out?
No, it doesn't blow it out, not that the seal is particularly good. just passes by existing openings in the seal if you will. A little less when closed then when pulled out, I wouldn't say there is a lot of pressure behind it, but it does puff in unison with the engine.

No sure what you mean by "stat", engine is pretty standard, running the mechanical diesel pump, a modified positive earth alternator made to look like a dynamo, original "1 ton" starter motor and the oil based airfilter. That pretty much sums up the ancillaries.

Don't know about 2 ltr unit but on later models there is a little O at the top of the tube to seal when stick is in. The normal rocker box cap vent clear?

Yes, I don't think I have that rubber any longer. I do have quite some leakage from the rocker cap vent, leaks on the o ring seal there and there is for sure some oil clogging that cap. I could give that a good clean, see if that helps it a little. Appreciate the idea!

thermostat (stat) but if its breathing out the dipstick sounds like it has blowby either the rings are getting clogged up with carbon or the crankcase is not venting well through the breather. if you remove the oil filler cap when its running and you see mist or say smoke or air blowing from the filler then yeah you got something going on then if its not then id say breather is clogged up. take a pic of the engine sometime so we can see where its leaking and if there is any clogged breather.

Yup it's running a stat. :). Away from the car for a few days. Will drop a picture when I am back!
