I had the same symptoms with a 200TDi upgrade I did for a mate a few months ago.
It was the timing.
I can swear hand on heart we put the new belt back in perfectly with all the tension in the right places and all the locking pins in.

To alter and test this we removed the Injection Pump 3 screw cover in the timing belt cover. Marked up the current timing with copydex and scratching timing marks into it.

Slackened off the 3 bolts that hold the pulley onto the end of the IP. Put on a good fitting socket onto the large nut in the middle and wacked it with a lump of wood. This alters the timing a few small degrees. Tighetened the 3 bolts and started the engine.

We did this a few times until we got a good idle and high speed run.

Don't forget the exhaust will smoke white for a long time as the old unburnt diesel lining the exhaust has to burn out with heat.

Cheers Patman. Its looking more like an air in the fuel related problem. I have two leaks, both of which I am struggling to fix. The first one being where my fuel hose is connected to the fuel pick up pipe and the second one being in the join between the fuel line ad the pipe to the lift pump. I can't have one length of pipe because I need the right union on the end, and they're a bugger to get hold of! The fuel filter housing is still filling up with **** loads of air, so it can only be getting in through there. What a total bugger of a problem to fix  It conked out completely earlier after drawing soo much air into the fuel line.

Not read this full post, but assuming your still looking for the cause of white smoke I would way bad injector OR leaking valve stem seal (yes it causes white smoke even although it's oil) based on what you have said. That can also be attributed to the white/grey smoke you get on start.

Hullo,

Looks like the fuel feed pin (is that the right term?) inside my injection pump was half sezied. It was only moving about 1MM out of it's housing, as opposed to the 10MM that it is now moving. That will have obviously meant that my engine was receiving no extra fuel when the engine was boosting. The white smoke is fixed now, that turned out to be a bit of water in the fuel. I'm still drawing air in mind - will be sorting that tomorrow :)

So far so good
