Smoke from exhaust and diagnostics communication problem

Your more than welcome, I hope the old injectors were tested before they recommended new ones as it seems your injector money could have been wasted without proof of the old ones failing. Unfortunately you haven't been able to find the correct person who can help. It's a shame we're all on lock down as there are some very good members on here and maybe some close by who would be happy to drop by and help. Cake and beer pays in dividends. Good luck with diagnosing the problem.

yeah the injectors were tested via a leak off kit. It pointed to one injector significantly worse than others and another just close behind. I made the decision to change them all for a piece of mind that they are covered, and to be honest, by the time I got a decent trade in rate for the old ones, it didn’t work out too bad. But at the time, I was obviously influenced by the mechanics optimism and thought that it was the problem.
They are lovely cars, but regret buying it to be honest. You obviously need a few quid saved for not if....but when things go wrong.
Thanks

We all agree they are great machines with plenty of character but demand more repairs than most and it is 15yrs old to boot. It all depends on how much you love/value it and can justify owning it. It is solely your choice and your feelings that'll determine the outcome of this adventure ;)

thanks for all your advice. I want to keep it. Just trying to do what I can myself at this stage. At least find what the problem is then determine the cost to repair. Just hard at this stage without a firm idea of what it is.

Agreed, just keep pushing on and you'll crack this nut. Dad says, can't think can't beat you!

Shut up dad.... :(:p

Range Rovers are not cars they are a hobby, if you cannot DIY they will empty your bank account in record time. The L322 electronics were designed by a mad man, to say the electronics are unreliable is like paying them a compliment.

I cannot recall when the diag changed on the L322 but details will be on the Storey Wilson website. Many people recommend tge GAP iid tool for later models. A standard OBD2 tool should read engine codes. You can get an ELM327 Bluetooth jobby that links to Torque on your smartphone for very little money.

The OBD will have a fuse somewhere. Worth checking. Also, check pins are clean with no green. Unfortunately, if it is CANBUS it can be a sod, as Datatek implied earlier.

Does RAVE still cover your model or is it a Topix job?

I don't think any standard OBD tool will read the engine codes on that engine, the only one they work on is the Rover V8.

Hi,
Fuse is ok, I’ve check all fuses I can find for pretty much everything. the contacts of the port are clean and look perfect.

You will have to educate me a bit with regards to RAVE and topix ?

Anyone have any opinions or advice on the “icarsoft” tool would be any good? Currently around £130 on eBay?

thanks

There's a company called gendan automotive that sent me an email this morning saying they make a diagnostic tool but I've not used it or even know if it works but you could check

Rave is a Lego instructions on how to build a RR. Sort of like a Haynes manual on steroids.
RAVE is the name of the one for P38s, later Landys use one called Topix that you need a subscription for.

@Mark Piercy has icarsoft hed know

I've an icarsoft for volvo and Saab and an autel mx808 for other cars but it is limited on the lr products and will do some tasks but mainly 2006 onwards.
A dedicated diagnostic tool goes a long way on these machines. There is no such thing as a cheap "useful" diag suite I'm afraid.

thanks for the info. I figured that was the case. Kinda get what you pay for I suppose. I think it will help, because at least if I can get the diag tool to at least communicate with the car, I can then book it into the garage, and they will obviously have the proper kit. It will save me going back and forth to them.

I’ve taken a look at the rave link, but I have a Mac, and can’t seem to get it to work. I will dig out an old windows laptop and see if I have any luck.

thanks for all the help so far guys

Storey Wilson's stuff is a hundred or so quid. Just needs a standard OBD2 cable. Allcomms or Can4D. I had a copy on my laptop until my laptop died.
