Fook me coming home from paying and playing today, was on the M62 doing about 60mph when all of a sudden a bit fooooking bang....... rear wheels locked up and heard the prop lashing round tw**ting everything it could reach!!!!

Any way after putting it in diff lock, taking off the rear prop, both half-shafts and spraying oil every where im home.......

However what has caused this to happen? The oil was full, did entire oil change on both diffs about 2 weeks ago!

Also whats the method of replacing what ever has busted? :(

what diff do you need? 24 spline or 10? I have an imiculate 10 spline one for 100 quid an old RR one for 50 quid. But only 10 splines im afraid.

Cause no idea mabe run before hand without oil. Mabe the bearings had been damaged by water mud crap no oil and finally had enough.

You're half way there. All you got to do is undo the ring of bots and pull the diff off. Don't let it fall on your head. Its bloody heavy and it hurts. Take it from me.
As to what happened. there isn't too much to a diff. Once you've got it off should be obvious, a chipped tooth on one of the gears or a failed bearing.
Rebuilding a diff needs a fair bit if setting up, gear backlash and such like. Re-con unit probably is best option.

Not sure wether i need 10 or 24 mate i never had owt to do with my diff so never checked!

Which splines is it you measure for it to be 24/10?....... The 'disc' looking gear?

Cheers fella! What do you mean a bout setting up mate with gear backlash?

when you took your half shaft out how many splines are on the end of it that went into the diff?

Diff rebuild needs to be done in a perfectly clean workshop. crownwheel and pinion bearing need to be perfectly aligned and the bearings need to be setup correctly. Not a job for the hobby mechanic. Jai

For gears of various sorts, they often need to be preloaded to a certain point to allow the correct amount of movement between a gear and the one it meshes with. If you get it wrong, the gears can wear very fast. If you have a look at the RAVE manual, it explains it. Usually you need dial gauges etc. That why doing a home gearbox rebuild is usually beyond the average DIY mechanic.
I tend to take the view that bearings are all manufactured to the same original tolerance but gears and casings are a different matter. So, changing the odd bearing you may get away with, but not gears.

Cheers matey, its beond what i can do then mate thanks alot for the info!

to be honest it just aint worth the time and effort of rebuilding a diff..

i have a local lr breaker and he does me a 10 spline diff for £40

If i buy a complete diff from a breakers, would it just be a case of me taking off me knackered one, replacing with the new one and putting back me half shafts?

Is it as easy as simply sliding back in the half shafts or do they also have to be set up??

Also will a discovery diff also fit if i get the choice? Its a 10 spline.......

yes to the above but make sure the oil and old bits of diff are out of the casing be very sure to get all the crap out otherwise you will be doing it all again very soon. Also worth checking the axle tubes for debris that you may have dragged when you took out the half shafts. Make sure its spotlessly clean and jobs a goodun. Jai

Cheers Jai, does it matter about fitting a front or rear diff? Just bin looking and they dont seem to specify?

They will fit but a word of warning if a diff has done X ammount of miles wearing on one side of the teeth and then you suddenly expect it to run on the opposite side of the teeth its going to be noisey as its not bedded in. I have a newly rebuilt diff but want good money for it. I also have a good 90 front that has done not too much work. For open to offers but again im probably miles away.

Be wary of any diffs that are cheap lots are sloppy i got one with a shagged bearing forom ebay a few weeks back that I will rebuild and sell also old high milage, abused off road before being sold off. All 10 spline stuff is at least 15 years old unless its been reconditioned.

The front diff is far more of a pain that the rear. The rear is about 20 minutes start to end. Front is an hour to 2 hours done properly.

How much for the 10 spline you wanting mate? Im near york?

P.s Why is a front diff harder to change?

Ah im miles away in Bedfordshire,

The front is more a pain in the ass as you either remove the axle end at the swivel ball axle end joint which means you have to really have to undo the brake lines to get a new gasket on or use silicone sealer plus extract both ends enough to clear the diff and they are bloody heavy. Or you can take the hubs off stub axles off and get the cv's and shaft out which means both hubs wheel bearings stubaxles and a whole load of liquid grease.
