thanks, I've yet to get round to removing them, one thing I would say is since fitting my gearbox I have gone through the ignition system and I would like to point out as others have a knackered vacuum advance or seized mechanical advance weights will give sluggish performance and terrible fuel consumption.
In my case it involved timing the engine and removing the lucas distributor, stripping it. doses of ease it spray to free and remove crap from weights and shafts. then spray grease to lube it as it appeared all pressed metal and shaft had a pressed over end.
rebuild making sure the hall effect sensor has an air gap and time up with strobe.
result is it now goes like buggery after timing it up
