just done part one , full turn cw no smoke and now pulls much better off the line and takes 30 mph in 4th much easier , cant wait to do the other 2 tweeks , many thanks

right i know this thread has been going on for a while now but i am having abit of trouble with my disco and i am stumped as to what it can be. so here is what i have done to my disco torx screw has been screwed down 1 1/2 turns, star wheel 1/4 turn & and boost pin fitted. i have silicone hoses fitted also a full size allisport intercooler fitted. daddy screw has been turned 1 full turn, when running i have 1 bar of boost showing on the boost gauge. now the boost gauge starts to rise at just over 1000 revs which seems early to me and i'm struggling to get anything over 60mph (on the straight flat road) out of the vehicle atm. (i am running 265/75/16 tyres) what am i doing wrong ? or what could the problem be? thanks in advance

tbh it was all running fine until the head gasket blew about a month or so ago and ive now repaired that but just does'nt seem the same since. i'm seriously looking at putting it all back to standard and starting again a little bit at a time.

Compression test? Even just to rule it out but yes back to standard might make it easier to diagnose the issue.

I assume you've double checked the boost pipe from turbo to FIP....possibly damaged refitting the head?

no not checked it but surely that would show a drop on the boost gauge, if only seeping back down slowly

I'd have thought so. Just thinking if nothing else has changed except the head coming off and going back on something in that process is likely the problem.

The pipe could be pinched or kinked, where are you measuring boost from?

If you have played and don't know what you are doing and the engine is down on power, having daft tyres on that raise the overall gear ratio won't help a lot. At an indicated 60 you are doing 65.4 MPH.

IMO anything over 65.4 mph in a Disco with daft tyres on it is frankly life threatening!
yeah I second that , done 65 the other day and  omg not to mention it was blowing 30mph out too. Im going to do this on my disco 300tdi , im guessing its the same fuel lift pump for auto and manual

Hi everybody been lurking here since I bought the money pit ( R plate 300 tdi manual Disco ) 18 months ago, anyway it has just failed the mot on smoke test, it was sort of mentioned last year so have done lots, cleaned out intercooler, fitted new turbo rubber pipes ( turbo elbow and short one bottom of intercooler ) changed cyclone breather, lined up air filter box input pipe to inner wing hole correctly, ran some very expensive injector cleaner through it, and it seemed to run much better.

Anyway getting to this thread, the previous owner said he had tweaked the fuel pump ( or had it tweaked ), so with some trepidation I took the tamperproof cap out of the smoke screw ( it was already damaged by previous intrusion, I of course have no idea what the previous person has done, so having to guess turned the smoke screw one full turn to the left , then took cover off the pump, the dot on the diaphragm was right at the bottom or pointing due south!!! was this my problem ? I set it so the dot is at the top or pointing due north, next I turned the star wheel one full turn to the left, any thoughts, I have a retest on Monday, is there any way you can reset the pump to standard ie turn star wheel all the way in, then back out a set amount, same with smoke screw, the diaphragm is no problem, so that assuming I get an mot, I can tweak the pump as per the instruction here, and KNOW what has been done.

Oh yes nearly forgot when I took the thing off the top of the pump with the wires on with a peg drive inside, some sort of rubber seal or something fell off in 2 half's its like a sort of sponge rubber about 3-4 mm thick one of them has disappeared onto chassis somewhere, I have re fitted the half I found, is this important, should it have been in one piece, and where can I get one, as I assume its a bosch fuel pump part.

Cheers Chris

Just found this excellent article on 300TDI tuning; thanks to all, but in particular to the OP for taking the time to set it out in clear simple steps, which suits me well!

i just want to say a massive thanks to the guy who informed us how to get the 300 disco tdi engine to work properly ,i even went and changed my disco transfer box to a defender one to see if that was the issue with no success ,give the screw on the pump boost pin cap two turns then locked it off its like a new mota fast as f and plenty bottom end now turbo spinning up quicker too as ive got a boost pin in too little chuff of black smoke when you boot it and thats it runs clean as a whistle no smoke no nothing and engine sounds lurvely MASSIVE THANKS TO LANDYZONE ONCE AGAIN
