would i notice a difference if i just adjusted the smoke screw in the centre?

That's the first thing i did and it makes a huge difference but only to low boost ,if yours is an auto you'll feel a great improvement when setting off.
For what time it takes it's well worth doing the other mods you won't regret it.
 
OK.... so what about manuals?? ... same procedure?? Im gonna have to take a look at those earlier links to see if this can be done to my 97 300 manual....
 
have you tried twaeking the boost up a little aswell?

in the lr 4x4 article it tells you how to turn the boost up by altering the length of the actuator rod.

This makes a great deal of difference without any major problems, can also clean up the emmmisions if ours is a bit smoky pre / post boost

Ok, I've started to do this, made a huge difference already...

Low boost up one full turn, Star wheel round about 2 thirds and diaphragm round about 1/4 clockwise.

I know I could go more, it only smokes a little if I floor the pedal. However, say I'm cruising at 50mph in 5th gear at 1500 revs it accelerates nice and easy to just over 2000rpm... The rev counter then sits there for a while as the road speed increases before moving upto 2500/3000rpm ... it doesn't seem to happen when accelerating quickly through the gears, just on slow acceleration, is this normal!? What adjustment should I make to create a more uniform acceleration? Just wondering before I start tweaking again...

Think I'm going to try this with my dad's 300 Tdi Auto, as he's been complaining about the lack of go recently. Got a de-cat pipe on its way here for him, and EGR has already been done. Will let everybody know how I get on ;)
 
Have just done the injection pump tweaks - my goodness! What a difference! :eek:

Pulls much much harder now, across the whole rev range. Jumps off the line, and pulls all the way up to motorway speed and beyond. I could take it even further, as it's not smoking at all yet. Well pleased though, the de-cat pipe can only improve it when it arrives :D

Your welcome,when you stop driving it like a joyrider with all that new power(I did) you should get better mpg,I'm saving a fiver a week since I did mine.
Oh and don't forget you can do this to any 200/300 tdi engine (non edc),like a 110 csw for instance ;) ;)

Not come across that before :confused: did it do it before you tweeked the pump? If not maybe turn it back a bit to try and cure it.

That's the plan ;):D In all honesty I did know I could have tried it on my 110 first, but I thought I'd better try it out on me old man's Disco first, in case I broke anything :eek::D

Just to check though, I am running my 110 on 50/50 veg oil at the moment - this shouldn't affect the tuning, should it?
 
Never run on veggie so don't really know,Just be more carefull with the adjustments and don't go too far or it might start running away with itself due to the veggie oil.

Interesting stuff.

My manual 300tdi runs well and gives good mpg so I'm concerned about tweaking it, the only major thing I find is poor pull away - it sort of starts to move then bogs down then recovers and off we go, it's worse with the trailer on. Is this likely fixable with the first adjustment in this procedure?

Diaphragm position adjusts the amount of fuel boost relative to boost pressure?

Max fuel screw (back of pump) adjusts pedal-to-floor fuel limit?

I think you're right,I've been working since 10 o'clock last night so brain not functioning!
Smoke screw(under little cap) increases fuel/power at low boost

star wheel increases fuel delivery rate in relation to boost pressure(allows diaphram to move down more)

diaphram increases full load fuel delivery rate

I didn't touch the one at the back of the pump(full power adjustment) aparently it gives you lots more power but uses lots more fuel

excellent stuff, I'll try tweaking the smoke screw a little then, its only the point from tick-over to turbo coming in that's a bit low, it doesn't stall but feels like it wants to when pulling away unless you slip the clutch a lot.

I'll go 1/4 turn in at a time i think.
