@Hippo A five minute tick over is easier than driving it about, so I shall give it a go next time, probably March.
Mike

The 5 minutes at tick over from cold is fine for the V6. The engine coolant will actually heat the box fluid via the oil cooler.
The TD4 is much slower to warm up. This requires a longer warm up time at idle or some help. To warm the TD4's box fluid. Let the engine idle with the box in D for a minute or so (brakes on). This will warm the box much faster. It's important to measure the temperature though. I use an infrared thermometer aimed at the drain bolt.

Anybody want to buy me an infrared thermometer for Christmas:)

The horror stories come from peeps doing it wrong. Follow the correct steps correctly and you'll be ok. Jatco oil change can work miracles by fixing strange faults on a FL1. Is it slipping in all forward and reverse gears or just some? Petrol v6 or diesel Td4? We could compare the revs for each gear to help.

ok let me describe this more accurately:

The car is a td4, the box feels like it is unsure it should be in 3rd and "sortof" slips back to second causing maddive revs then jumps back to third, there is no smoothness an=bout the box it feels clonky in the lower gears!

I am still worried about cocking this up, I dont know why I just am !!

Mine does a similar thing when it changes into 5. It goes in smooth, but locks the torque converter straight away. It then realises and knocks the TC back off again.
I put mine down to a programme error.
Yours could be a sticky solonoid though.

I was thinking about this over xmas but my interweb was down. I've removed that comment and told peeps to measure instead. Reason being ambient temp starting point plays a big part anorl. Got to look after peeps in the middle east and those who are upside-down.

It always amazed me just how much fool the v6 used to create so much heat when sat on tick over. Putting aside the warm up routine I would have hoped they would have reduced the revs once warm when it was stationary on tick over.

I agree about he Td4 taking longer. Been a while since doing the auto oil on one of those and have a habit of always thinking v6 auto. I put some figures on ere somewhere before on time v temp before out of interest and came to the same conclusion on coolant. I think those with fool burning heaters would warm up faster than those without, as well as the off set starting point for hotter countries. So I've removed my comment about time. Measuring is best as per LR.

Its all how you pitch it, its half price just now and you are saving £20
I was just about to say they often half the price on them. Been doing it as a regular price drop for years.

That's not too bad a price. I shall have a word with the boss, she might be feeling generous.

If it's difficult get this instead. Tell her it's to measure the temp of cooked food. I poke mine in the top of the auto (but not too far to get it stuck).

What sort of miles has the auto done?

An oil change can do wonders for the Jatco. The other option you have is to do a resistance check to see if the sensors/solenoids are within spec. An out of spec resistance on a sensor would give duff info to the auto's computer as an example. Gear changes should be smooth but changing back as if it's not sure just after a change shouldn't happen. I wonder if this is because your on the cusp of the change. What about if you're mph is still increasing past the change point. Does it still change back to what it was before, then up again?

Well I was going to buy an IR temp sensor thing. But you know when you get distracted and start clicking on web pages:oops:
So I'm now the proud owner of a new set of Cokin Neutral Density filters for my camera.
I shall now be able to take beautiful photos of my auto box sump plug:)
