Slide-out side steps, are they available?

Okay, so my Defender was raised a tiny bit by the last owner (not a problem at all, gives me a better view over the walls at tourists bombing around corners in the middle of the road :D).

Personally I have no problem getting in or out of the Landy (i'm a pretty tall lass), however everyone else seems to struggle (even with the rockslider/side-steps). I was thinking of installing a slightly lower slide-in/slide-out side step (rather than the usual folding type). Does anyone know if these are an available item? I have personally never seen them, although I think they would make a lot of sense (especially if they can be retracted or deployed from a button).

I might end up having to fashion a pair myself :p

Dunno about availability but we had an ambulance once that had a slide out step, it was electrically operated but also had a manual override in the form of a lever. Perhaps ask a coachbuilders??

That sounds like exactly what i'm after! Thanks for the tip. Personally I wish everyone else would just grow a little taller :p

I want a similar thing. I had a normal side fold out side step, lasted about an hour off road before a rock ripped it off. So would much prefer something I can stow more out the way

Would a set of folding steps with a spacer or two not do it? How high is your motor?

No, could get wiped out a little too easy with the rock sliders pushing it out too far.

As bankz5152 said, would just be nice to have something that slide away out of sight, out of mind. Having the folding step at the rear is no problem, but on the sides it isn't really an option :)

Hmm I wonder if a folding step could be fitted on the rock slider tubes?

There is plenty of space under a 90 where a step could easily be fitted and be out the way, just a matter of designing, building, testing one haha

dont think a sliding step would be much use as they would be almost as high as the floor , thats why the folding ones fold down as they go out . How about fitting a derrick above the door , then you just lift them up and swing them in :)

Okay, you have me lost there, what on earth is a derrick? I have heard of Derrick's in oil drilling, is it the same thing? :D

you can get electrically operated fold out or extending steps - check out the caravan scene

However itll take some fabricating some brackets to distribute the catilevered load properly.

Not beyond the wit of man (woman)

height /ground clearance is still the problem with those though, they really need to come out and down at an angle and have ladder like rungs.

How about a length of chain fashioned like a rope ladder fixed to the floor/battery box so you can open the door drop it out then tuck back in after use?

It was only a joke, they use similar to lift spare wheels just like a bent over tube with a lifting cable set up :)
