Hi Guys.
I'm new to this so sorry if I get this all wrong.
I've Just pick up my 90 from my local garage after they sent it home saying the fault was beyond them! Good for them for being honest and they didn't charge me for the time they had spent on it. Anyway engine cuts out without warning, sometime re-starts straight away sometimes doesn't. Managed to figure out it does it only when going down hill, mostly when breaking into junctions or roundabouts. Just found out that it will do it when stood on a hill and you slam the drivers door and being on a hill it won't now start.
I've come to the conclusion that its a wiring fault. I've been through all the cables I can see and get at but can't force the fault to occur by hand.
Any one got any ideas where might be a good place to start looking?
Sadly I don't have a fault reader - anyone know a good one that can monitor in real time as well as fault codes? Spending a few hundred on a good tester might prove a good investment I think. Alan264
 
Definitely sounds electrical. Some exposed wiring which is making contact with the chassis and earthing out when the car leans forward.
 
Hi Guys

It was registered Feb 2003. I've pulled the dash board apart and I've found a wire with the end stripped to the copper not connected to anything on the Grey Multi block connector on the Lucas YWC106280 Central Locking/Alarm unit. I've tried earthing it but it doesn't stop the engine. I'm now trying to find out what it might be before I move on elsewhere. Thanks for helping on this. Cheers Alan
 
Hi Just found out out what the loose orange wire is connected to the central locking unit. Its the aerial. Well with a bit of luck I'll at least be able to extend the range of the key by making sure the aerial is best positioned!.
 
has it got one of those engine shutdown switch things that cuts evrything out in a crash

if so it might be faulty due to damp or vibration as ive seen this happen with an MPI disco once over :D:D

Hi Guys

Its a 90 2003, I've check the Battery terminals and the earth straps all OK.
So far I've had the dash apart and found nothing, I've had two fuse boxes apart and found nothing. I've been through all the sensors and all connections all appear OK apart from the Injector Loom! - The Multi Plug on the Cylinder Head has been broken (I've never worked on it so it must have happened at the hands of a garage!) There is Oil in the plug but its not got into the wires yet so I've ordered a new Loom and Cover Gasket. I cleaned the plug and took it out for a drive, engine stopped 3 times in 1/2mile, Last time it stopped it didn't want to start. I'm now back under the bonnet with a hammer bashing wiring looms.

Can anyone recommend a good code read/mapper?

Can't find an engine shut down switch - I think this van might be too early for one?

:D I'm sure the OP doesn't think that lol

Is prety funny tho,

Intermittent faults are a bugger, we have one on our caddy van, sometimes it takes ages to start, others it starts first time, but never does it when we take it into the garage so they carnt find any faults lol
 
I'm assuming from your mention of plugs that it's petrol not diesel. In that case I think I'm right in saying it won't have a fuel cut-off valve.

I sounds as though it can only be electrical. Have you checked inside the distributor that there are no loose wires? LT-to-coil? HT-to-coil?

If the HT leads are flaky could it be that they're earthing when disturbed? Maybe just the king lead?
 
Don't all petrol engines have a fuel cut off valve to stop fuel being sprayed out under pressure in the event of a collision. Used to have a Granada with one in the boot which was triggered when you slammed the tail gate too hard!

Could be a blockage in a fuel line possibly?
 
Now it's on a hill and permanently broken down it should be easier to trace! You can find what has stopped it working and trace back to its source!
