Last week I got my monthly text & email from Skytag saying that the unit was not responding on my 90 (that unit now being at least 5-years old), it didn't look like a battery problem but instead a failure to communicate. I carried out a few checks and spoke to the nice people at Skytag several times but in the end it was decided that the unit must be faulty so I should return it to them for testing.
That was last Thursday and this Tuesday I get a message saying that my unit was in the post heading back to me. What I soon realised was that they were quoting me a different serial number and after a quick call it turns out that my old unit had suffered a software failure and so they were replacing it FOC. Top service or what!

Of course anyone who scans the For Sale section may have noticed that a couple of weeks ago I was selling a Skytag unit that was barely 18-months old, that came out of my motorcaravan which had just been sold. My immediate thoughts were "bother, sell one perfectly good unit only to have to buy another just a week later" but no, thanks to those nice people at Skytag my old unit has been replaced (must be a lifetime warranty on them?).

Top service guys.

What a contrast to the Tracker factory fitted to my motorcaravan when new.
At 5-years old I contacted them to see what my subscription options were (you pay up front with Tracker) and they said they didn't recommend extending the subscription as the life of the unit was about up but instead they would sell me a new unit / installation / subscription package (at vast expense of course).

Needless to say the Tracker was consigned to history and a Skytag unit replaced it.

Fitted the new unit this evening and I mean the NEW unit, new design with better messaging from the lights and what looks to be a better multipin connector. Also the wires look to be thicker so were easier to connect.
Terrific service, after all those years they just replace the unit for a brand new one yet you own the unit and are free to remove it and sell it on to another owner who then just has to take out a new subscription with no additional start-up cost.

I know there are pros & cons to all tracking devices but to most of us it is cost, reliability & service that we are looking for and in my view Skytag tick all the boxes.

One good thing about "Tracker" is it uses another system as well as GPS, so it can't be jammed by the £50 GPS jammers you can buy on Ebay.
But any tracking device is good.
However
l like the idea that you can remove the Skytag unit and either sell it or fit it to your new vehicle.

We sold our Defender 90 last month and despite the tracker unit being fitted only a few months previously, there was no refund of subscription available and we couldn't remove the unit to fit to another vehicle, we would have to buy a new one.

Fortunately we didn't replace the Defender, so it wasn't needed. But that's over £400 down the pan for around six months use of the tracker.

"Can I be cheeky and just ask, cost?"

The unit is anything from free (when you take out insurance with Heritage I believe) and then from about £85 upwards depending who you buy from.
There are three levels of subscription but the basic one (which I have ) is £6.99 PM.
As already stated, you can start / stop the subscription whenever you like unlike Tracker whose subscription is paid up front and non-refundable (yes, I got caught out with that as well).
