Alright alright gents, I do own a calculator so I would have been able to work it out myself eventually....honest.
Bit worried by the comment from Andy, he has only had is a short time and is already knee deep in oil and repair bills.
So what about the tax thing then boys.......am I gonna get stung in the years to come owning a large 4x4?

Who knows?? 4x4's are, politically speaking, more out of fashion than deep-fried pizzas in Scotland

Alterations to road tax didn't used to be retrospective but in this last budget all that changed.

If you buy something pre 2000 you're PROBABLY not going to get burnt - but hey, life has no guarantees

Hi SWF. Not surprising this thread is on page five already with the title. Clever girl. Well I'm kinda new here but not entirely new to the L-R world. I am looking for a late 300 tdi disco myself at the moment, and can't decide on "keep it cheap" (i.e. £1500ish and prbably 150,000ish), or spend £4,000 for a minter. For me it must be manual and must have air con. I would forget a dealer warranty as to keep it valid, you will have to spend a lot on expensive servicing. I would also say if you're paying under £2000, why buy fully comp insurance? You will probably have a £500 excess, so if you were to make a claim you would be paying £500, plus losing your 4 years NCB. Best keep your money for the inevitable trips to your local indy.

Oh and lastly how about posting a pic (of yourself not another disco, we all know what they look like) to really keep this thread going

ledisco, thanks for your input, I only wish I had £4k to spend as I would be swimming in lovely disco's in my area for sale, unfortunately to be finance free I can only go to £2k. I guess I was hoping to find a nice N reg one woman owner with 40,000 on the clock that has been used to do the weekly shopping run to Tesco only with FSH, leather interior, Air Con and all for £2k. Yes, I am dreaming, the chance of me finding that perfect disco specimen is almost as high as one of you guys being 007-James Bond or the Milk Tray Man.

Well gentlemen and slobs I just thought I would update you all on my initial thread and seek some more advice.

I did it, I bought a 300tdi on a N plate, black with nice alloys, good nick, 103,000 on the clock, it had all the necessary bits I needed like a side step for my short arse and a tow bar for my trailer. I got it privately from an ad in Autotrader. It has just had a new clutch on the 31st of March and I have the receipt for £337 to prove it. I drives nicely, no clunks, knocks or whines. Rust seems to be not a problem, the boot floor was replaced last year as that had rust through so I dont have that to worry about, inside the rear doors on the wheel arches there is nothing, sills seem OK and even the back bumper only has a little bit round the edges.

There are just three things wrong with it that I can see, one being the drivers seat is ripped and well worn, ideally I would just like to get a cover for it, tried ones in Halfords and they dont fit, think they are really only meant for cars and obviously the Discos seats are a bit bigger, can anyone recommend somewhere that does cheap covers that actually fit?
Secondly there is a little bit of a crunch (not actually noise but a feeling in my hand when I hold the gearstick) when I change from 1st to 2nd gear.
I could just leave it as it is and put up with it but if it is a cheap job then I would get it fixed.
Lastly the rev dial doesnt work - do I need it to? will it fail an MOT if it doesnt work?

I was also thinking about taking in to the garage to get it serviced (not a Land Rover garage but a local independant), would you recommend that? and what should I expect to pay.

The car looks to be 'waxed' underneath (I hope that is what you call it - black gunk all sprayed over everything) and the interior is extremely clean. I have put a nice new Pioneer unit in there as the original Land Rover cassette player was still in there, generally pleased but would welcome any tips now from you experienced men out there as I am sure that the fun begins now. Think I should warn my bank manager what I have bought.

Sounds good. I have had mine in Autotrader the last 2 weeks and had 1 phone call. If I dont get any interest I guess I'll keep it. Rev counter is not an issue as far as MOT goes Not sure if its electronic or a mechanical cable or what. I would just make sure the gearbox has oil etc in it. I pay £79 for an interim service from a local independent. Keep it well maintained and it will serve you well.

Why dont you post a piccy so we can all see it?

the rev counter could be your alternator on it's way out they are only about £75 or even as simple as a loose/broken connection

Yes, the rev counter is powered by a si,gle wire off the back of the alternator. Sometimes this just comes off !!!

Well, I've learned something new today!

Well here she is, I say she as I have already named her Daisy Disco, please note the spotlights arent something I have done and I am undecided about whether to keep them or not.
Further detail on the gearbox niggle I have after taking her out for a long drive yesterday is that the crunch only takes place when going from 1st to 2nd gear, if I change between any other gears it is smooth as paste but it is just that one issue.

The crunch from 1st to 2nd is very common on LT77 boxes. They'll go on for thousands of miles like that. Just learn to take the changes nice and slow, specially when the engine & gearbox are cold.

Yes but surely, all Tdi 300 manuals had the R380 box, didn't they. And they're not so prone to the first to second crunching.

Domino, try a gearbox oil change, using Difflock synthetic gear oil, it's the dogs !!

Gearbox and axles are often neglected so If were you, I would have all the oils changed, then you know you're good to go and it starts the maintenance schedule for them.

You did well if you did. Like biglad says, get a good service done with all the major stuff and especially things like cam belt. then keep on top of it and it will serve you well.

I actually paid £1800 for it, it was advertised as £2000 ono so I thought I would try a cheeky offer and he accepted. Lovely jubbly. I saw some dogs along my travels, some newer ones on P and R plates that were rough and so when I went to view this one I knew it was a good un.
