If the water pump was goosed....it would still be goosed with out a stat fitted....and would get just as hot.

Not necessarily, theres a much smaller hole through an open stat than no stat. Would still be my next job, replacements aren't expensive. Plus you may end up finding a bit of debris stuck in behind it too
Assuming standard dash with a 2 inch diameter gauge? then the new guage is exactly the right size to just drop in.
