Hi and welcome to the club.
I will be following your post and progress with interest, I also bought a fattie, albeit a Td6, unseen a few months ago.
I have learned so much, mainly with the help of the good folk on this site, and realize that I still know nothing, so much still to unearth but very enjoyable.
I have recently had a fabulous round trip up and around Edinburgh in Sally (my beauties name, car not wife you understand, ahem) although my wife was with us both! Purred all the way, what a way to travel
Still so much to do to get her back to her best, but enjoying every moment when I can spare the time.
Good luck with your new beast when she finally arrives
Cheers

Hi @BillyboysLad

Thanks for your message. NIce to hear you can drive yours.. I think i'm still a while off that lol. Mine has a name too, Silverbelle, From the r

Quick update to the thread anyway - I believe the Range has been picked up, according to the owner of the courier company. Let's see how true that is!!

So.. the car was supposed to picked up yesterday.. It wasn't and the mechanic just sent this pic. Another previously unseen angle up close :)

The suspension maybe on the bumps also because the height sensors are faulty. That could also cause it to be stuck.

I regret buying a cheap compressor. Mine now goes and down albeit slowly.

The rust would concern me. The rear quarter in particular. It could be in the sills and you can't see that without removing the side steps and the plastic covers. If they are rotting the jacking points could be gone and it many many of of work to rectify it. You might also be catching before it gets really bad.

It's a good thing you like solving problems as you certainly have a few.
Could be leaking air strut, weak compressor, leaking tank, leaking valve block, dodgy ride height sensor. Get it plugged in. And as i discovered today on my 4.4 v8,missing on cylinders 1,4,3,2 was caused by E10. Put super unleaded in and it ran like a watch- until something else goes wrong, which it will!

From my experience i would say you need to be brave and a swivel eyed lunatic to buy a Range Rover. I have had many cars since 70's that rarely went wrong, this bag of spanners rarely goes right. Good points- comfort and 22mpg on petrol or lpg is'nt bad

Yea could be a heap of things. When I get my hands on it i'll run through all of that.. eeek!

Well I have established i'm gone a little that way already. To be honest though, this is my 4th vehicle and it won't be my daily driver which I will rely on. It was bought for 2k and I work on it myself so there is a bit of a margin for error to get it back to good. I am looking forward to working on it and love that kind of work.. If I decide to sell in a couple years time I can't imagine myself losing a massive amount on it.

It should be fun.

It's worth changing suspension bags, but buy complete assembled strut with new shock from rimmer bros. Some parts are cheaper from main dealers,as they were for my vito which i wrote RIP- rust in peace, on 2yr ago! I phoned auto electrician today to ask if he could find poor earth to fuel pump, but as soon as i told him what car it was he said he was'nt interested. Complicated to put it mildly, ecu's everywhere.A late friend had one new in 02 and his solicitor wrote to lr to ask for his money back and was advised not to park the car in a multi storey or near an airport because the technology may upset the 27 ecu's! Shocking

Wow. At least it will sound good if I get it to run....

Ok, lads & lassies, boys & girls, ladies & gents!!

After two months, the motor has arrived!!

Plenty of work to do and a few positive surprises..

The good:
  • (surprise) More than half a tank of fuel
    1f642.png
  • (surprise) Venture cam exists
  • (surprise) Rear screens work (had to turn on), after being told they didn't
  • (surprise) Car seems to have rose up on it's own after the engine running a while. Can't operate the suspension height though as it thinks a door is open.. I guess that is because everything is unplugged on passenger door.
  • The interior isn't in awful nick. While currently rough and dirty.. I think it has the potential to come up nice.. The piano black trim seems in good order and should clean up nicely. The leather is good all around. For 162k miles. The driver seat bolster shows a faint bit of wear. But no tears or broken stitching..
  • Tyres seem in decent order. Plenty thread on back and a reasonable amount up front. Not the best brand IIRC.
  • No lip on rear brakes - a little up front, but still meat in them.
  • Apart from the body work, it's not in bad nick to be honest. No dents / dings scratches etc. That I could see. Will need to take a closer look.
From initial inspection - here's what needs doing:
  • Rust, obviously
    1f642.png
  • Check engine light....... Waiting on IID to arrive.
  • Add the door card back in and get the electrics working and go to town on the suspension.. when the door is back working it may highlight further issues.. because the reason for the firesale from previous owner was a suspension fault. We shall see.
  • On the suspension point - car has sat a lot - need to open the spare wheel well and see if there is a swimming pool or what it's like in there.
  • No brakes! Need to repair the lines, warning in dash to check fluid - I believe it's leaking somewhere.
  • Brake discs are rust after sitting for 12 months. Probably remove and clean with citric acid.
  • Mirrors - OS missing glass - NS won't open/close electronically! That could be expensive!!
  • Cosmetically, centre console trim needs spraying. The broken button for hill descent needs fixing. Also key is in a sorry state so will see what can be done. One key only, too..
I think first of all it's brakes and suspension so I can drive it.

Don't look too bad that. :D
Venture cam will probably need new batteries. Got mine from Powerfulluk
Timpsons do key fobs but are around £50
I just used metalic car paint for my trim

That looks good. How does it match? Were you concerned about that? Or did you give all trim a freshen up?

I am wondering about spraying 2K clear over it.

I might try an eBay special for key shell. I personally don't think i'll be replacing the Venture cam batteries as I don't think i'll use it. Just nice to see it was there.

The match was ok for that trim as it's not next to an original, I'll see if I can find what I used but you may want to do all of yours anyway.
I didn't clear coat as I wanted a rougher finish to match the factory finish.
I got a cheapo key from Amazon but the posts on the inside of the buttons was too long so were constantly being pressed.

Applying the brakes cleans the rust off discs PDQ with no effort:cool:

Not the kind of rust these have. All the centre is rusty too.. A dip in the acid and some silver paint will make it look nice. Actually. I might go for VHT black this time.

Had her out getting a breather at the weekend :)

I've been doing a little research and discovered that it's all OEM. Body kit and headlights are all standard 2006 fare and the wheels are from a slightly newer RR Sport. That will all do.. doesn't seem as bastardised anymore. That said, I need to remove the Overfinch badges and go back to LR.
