On holiday last week and the auxiliary drive belt on my 300tdi started shredding itself on the inside (closest to the engine). Put a new one on and 50 miles later same thing.
A quick look underneath shows the steering pulley pump to be responsible.
How can this be? Any ideas?

Sounds like it's sticking causing it turning slower than the other pulleys, is your power steering working ok?
Try removing the belt and turning the power steering pulley by hand to see if there's any resistance or noises.

Its the pas pump, is u/s its a common thing , the bearing fails and trhe pulley migrates forward. New pump will sort it HTSH

Mine just did the same thing with a new belt. I thought it was the belt tensioner, as the damage was on the back of the belt, and it was squawking. New tensioner fitted but not tried yet, better check the PAS pump as well now!

Just happened to ant.7's disco 300tdi. Squealing, then shredded belt. He put a new p/s pump on earlier- dunno why it took him so long to do it though.

Mine is still squealing, with the new tensioner. Alternator feels a bit dry but not too bad. So guess it must be the PAS pump. Is there any way to tell it is Shot or just substitute a new one. Don't really want to buy a new PAS pump if its not that.

It doesn't squeak on tickover only when revving.

I had an auxiliary belt smoking just the other day. I thought that a bearing must have gone somewhere, but it turned out that one of the alternator mounting bolts was missing, so the alternator had some movement in it, causing drag on the belt.

The alternator was taken apart at an autoelectrician not so long ago, so they must not have tightened the bolts properly.

Always best to check simple things first.;)

I'm in exactly the same boat!!!
Where did you get your new tensioner? I think Im going to try new bearings!!

Mine is a Dayco one from my local independent Landy garage as he gets allmakes stuff in for me. They are about £40 ish on the websites.

My water pump has just been replaced and tensioner so must be PAS or alternator.

A quick thing to try is get a wiper blade reinforcing strip and slacken the tensioner mounting bolt , slide it between tensioner and timing cover , this slightly tilts the tensioner to one side, if that stops the squeal thats your problem , as mentioned read " Penny trick"
