NO its a drain hole to which a plug is fitted when wading.

I just noticed you're in Cornwall. I'm in Downderry, near Looe. Who do use to fix your Landy? I've been pointed to a guy called Simon in Tideford, reputed to be the God of Landy. Roger Young hires him to do all of his engine and gear box recons.

I work in Downderry sometimes, but I'd be in my blue Vivaro van.
Both mine are in the standard tool roll, the other one goes in the bottom of timing case (300 TDI).

Brills, I've learned something! I'll try and get the bolts just in case.
Plenty on ebay for not very much. Just search for wading plugs.
If yours is like mine there will also be one in the crank case

A suitable rubber bung or wine cork does the job just as well. I have seen tampax used as well when I worked in Tanzania. . If you are not going deep water wading then don't bother.
