Hi,

I have been offered a 2004 Freelander V6 Sport automatic - 5 door. It has about 25000 miles on the clock and 2 stamps in the book. It has been offered for about £2k less than the equivalent TD4. I was wondering what peoples opinions of this variant were?

A mechanic friend of mine (who used to work for Williams Land Rover in 0161) has said that the JatCo gearbox is not brilliant and can fail easily, but they seem to produce gearboxes for loads of manufacturers.

I have heard something about issues iwth the rear diff spinning faster than the front, which can cause problems

Apart from my wish to be slightly more "green", the mpg is not an issue for me, at the moment...my current car drinks the stuff!

The same mechanic mate has said that it is one of the most overlooked vehicles in his opinion, but advises a TD4 diesel is better.

An opinions would be gratefully recieved.

NO! If you search the forum you will probably get the opinion that you should walk away from this deal no matter how good it sounds. There's a reason why its cheap. Use the search button and have a look around this forum and you will understand where I'm coming from. Welcome to the looney bin though. :)

Thank you for the heads-up.

Shame looked a sweet ride - pimped, sitting on 18's...hahaha - and the right price for a second car too.

Such hate for the KV6.

They arent that bad honestly.

I just wouldnt want to fuel one, great fun to drive though.

I think there are a few regulars on here who drive the KV6's, i would trust their opinion more than the forum dwellers who are just Td4 fanbois :)

there are good ones and bad ones.
Unfortunately the Petrol engines and the cooling system is such a poor design that the chances are much greater that you will have a catastrophic failure. Sequential HGF is a common occurrence and the later gaskets, although giving an improvement are not fail safe and needs to be done in conjunction with all the other mods to stand a chance.
Dont forget it will still suffer from all the usual Freelander faults. Cracked chassis / Broken rear subframe mount / VCU problems. none are insurmountable, but not cheap.

fanboi or fanbois

1. Derogatory. A person with an irrational attachment to a particular item or brand name, and an equally irrational dislike for competing brands or items. This behaviour is often seen during discussion threads pertaining to ISPs, computer hardware or motor vehicles.

2. A person who has a strong dislike of a particular item or brand name may incorrectly refer to another who uses that product as a fanboi.

I think I should prefer to be called a TD4 enthusiast.

That's a bit strong old bean, especially as many of those Td4 guys were stung by the V6 or 1.8.

Anyone who asks for advice should be aware of the possible pitfalls. I was thanks to other places before I bought my Td4 which was why I avoided petrol then I found this place after I'd bought my car & it's been brilliant.

I have td4 auto with jatco, lovely to drive anywhere doing anything, motorway or country lanes, green laning, towing trailer or caravan (obviously not towing caravan while greenlaning).

well happy with it, would recommend the combination to anyone thinking of a freelander.

I must agree with Opt P - the TD4 with the Jatco box is a great combo.

I have not heard any major complaints about it at all. Most problems I've heard proved to have been 'operator error', neglecting regular oil changes or incorrect level-checking.

I could not perform better changes with a manual box, and I cannot think of any situation where it was 'caught out' by the surface or slope.
