Just wondering what the consensus was regarding which is the best between
the Shogun 2800 or the Colorado 3.0 diesels for towing. We have recently
changed our Caravan to a twin axle Sterling Trekker. I am look for the best
vehicle to use, we currently have a Pajero which is all but the same as the
Shogun but our 2800 TD does seem a little sluggish compared to the UK
Shoguns I have driven?

TIA.

Assuming the older models, then IIRC both are around 120 to 130hp.
maybe one is only 113hp? Anyway, neither is a ball of fire but both
will be more than adequate for a light 'van. The best vehicle is the
newer Colorado 3.0 D4D which has a nice 160hp. The new shape Shogun
also has around 160hp so my choice is mostly a personal preference.

I tow with a 1996 2.8D Shogun. I find it pulls like a train - it just ate
the hills in Devon this summer, towing a 1300kg Europa. I am told that the
Pajero, despite looking the same as the Shogun, is a VERY different car. It
is not really designed for towing, the rear chassis not having cross
members in for strengthening ( you can buy a conversion kit evidently).
Also, the engine is different, and only designed to do 80000 kms or
something, at which time Japanese motors are supposed to be scrapped!! At
which time they are shipped over to the UK and sold to us! The metals used
are a lot softer I am told by my local 4X4 specialist - they often have to
rebuild the engines. Having said that - I do see a lot of very happy Pajero
drivers around, so they can't really be THAT bad, but the engine difference
probably explains the performance differential.

However I would have bought a Colorado if I had had the dosh at the time -
cheaper parts, bullit proof integrity -btw the Prado IS exactly the same as
the Colorado - so you are safe there!

Been underneath and worked on several imprted Shoguns and they are
mechanically the same as the ones they export. Are you really that
gullible that you believe Mitsubishi use softer steel for domestic
vehicle engines when they know that they will be exported eventually?
I find it hard to credit anyone with the intelligence to use a
computer with such a belief. But then, this is a Newsgroup I suppose
and all kind of weird views and beliefs float around so we should not
be surprised.

You have been told a load of complete and utter nonsense. It seems
that you believe absolutely everything you are told, without question.

The earth is flat, by the way.

I agree.... it does look that way! Check out
http://www.pocuk.com/phpBB2/ for more 'detailed' information....

Simon (a Pajero owner - which tows just as well as my last Shogun -
but with lots of 'extras'!!)

A white van has just written off my husband's old F-reg S/W/B Shogun 2.6
which was converted from petrol to lpg.
You didn't know you had a caravan on the back, it was wonderful. We had to
use my Frontera this year and boy was it sluggish. Can't wait to get
another Shogun.

Mt tug at the moment is a 1998 Landcruiser Amazon 4.2 td. We are thinking of
getting a new shape Shogun LWB 3.2 DiD I have heard some very good reports
in the CC mags etc and wondered if the Shogun is a better towcar than the
Landcruiser. Nothing wrong with the Landcruiser except sometimes difficult
to park and coming up to 80k but the fuel consumption with our twin axle is
around 25mpg below 60mph I understand for the Shogun are a bit lower etc.

Regards

Simon (a Pajero owner - which tows just as well as my last Shogun -
but with lots of 'extras'!!)
