Heat it and beat it :D

If you can heat it up to red and then let it cool you should be able to drill it out.

Don't allow the cast to get too hot otherwise you run the possibility of warping it!

If you have oxy-acet, use a number 3 nozzle, and just keep it on the easyout until red, then go and have a couple of coffees!

It has to be at ambient before you drill it out with a good quality drill bit ... and use plenty of cutting fluid!

red hot and thin old cast iron dont mix, not warping, but cracking

iv just had two bolts shear in my old v8 timing cover, where the oil pump is bolted on,becuase i was going to pack it with jelly so it primes properly when i start her up,and managed to drill one out and tap an m6 thread, but an easy out snaped in the other( fuuuuuuuuuuuk!!!!!!),and of coarse its alloy, fuk it!

they would be unc not metric

EDM a modern marvel ? Ive been using it for around 49 years.
It was invented by a Russian bloke in the 1930s

yea ino,but both of the bolts that snaped wuddnt come out with the easy out,and i didnt fancy snaping another one,so i just drilled it out,and put an m6 thread in there, not much else i could have done! if it wasnt alloy,i wud be able to heat it,but even then its the oil pump face,so wud probably warp it!

... I've used a diamond tile drill before. It's like a tube with a bit of diamond dust stuck on the end. They're about £4 - £5 This has the effect of drilling a hole around the easy out. You have to run it very slow. When you drill the core out you have the option of welding the hole up and re-tapping it, or sticking a heli-coil in there. ...

thanks Locky -;)- the 'porcelain diamond' drill bit arrived this morning and it worked just as you said.

Just for the benefit of anybody coming to this later I attach a photograph of the drill bit and the plug that came out. I made a jig to make sure that I went in vertically (second photo) but this was a mistake. I couldn't see what was going on so I abandoned it and I think it hasn't done too much harm to drill freehand.

I now have a 7mm deep hole made by the diamond bit (12mm in diameter) and then the orignal threaded bolt hole continues for a further 10mm. So I'm thinking - perhaps no need for a helicoil. Just fill the gap with some silicon gasket sealant and use a longer bolt?

Any advice?

Have you thought about tapping to M14, insert a short piece of studding, then drill and tap that to M6?

No helicoil required!

There are ways round anything! :D
