I apologise if this question has been asked over and over!

My 97 2.5 DSE auto is overdue a service and because im running it on a "fairly" tight budget I've decided to service her myself.

Now I've only serviced my classic mini myself previously and I'll admit I find the engine bay of my p38 a bit intimidating!!! Does anyone have a step by step guide on servicing the Range?

I also want to change the oil/filter in the gearbox, so any advice on that would be great :)

Also looking on island 4x4 I can choose between Britpart or OEM, has anyone had experience of the Britpart service kits? As they are a fair bit cheaper

Matt

Get a copy of rave. An search the forum theres several guides on doing the gearbox. Wouldnt be intimidated by the old girl. Its quite a simple beast really.

The Rangey is a great vehicle to work on, as there's generally plenty of space around everything compared with other vehicles.

Some tips:

  1. Make sure you get the correct oil filter. I think yours will be the alloy tops (as opposed to the plastic tops on later models)
  2. If you're changing the transmission fluid without the filter, make sure you can open the filler plug before unscrewing the drain plug
  3. If you're changing the transmission fluid filter, have a T27 Torx driver to hand before you start (you'll need it to remove the old filter from inside the sump).
  4. Put some clean diesel in the new fuel filter before you install it - it will save extra work on your fuel lifter pump and avoid excessive air in the injector lines.

It's only an engine.
Air filter, oil & filter, coolant and you're well on your way.
Phase two - fuel filter (can be a bitch to get off) and gearbox. The gearbox is dead easy, it just takes a bit of time to undo the sump, then the filter is obvious.
Whilst you're under there why not do the diff oil and grease the UJs as well? As always with the diffs make sure that the filler plugs move before you drain them.

Don't forget transfer box oh and a check of the brakes helps too:p

Oem never had a problem with non oem in all my life if you want to pay silly money go ahead op
It better to change check regularly than paying more and leaving stuff to fail.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
Going to get stuck in at the weekend.

Will do the diffs at the same time as she is whining a fair bit from the front and figured it may be well overdue some fresh oil.

I'm not at home at the moment so I can't just pop out and look and I want to pick up the parts tomorrow but will my oil filter housing be the plastic or alloy top ? It's a 97 DSE if that helps.
