hi my name is jamie and i have a problem, ( reminds me of aa meetings).
my lovely series III starts great runs great for a while then decides to start cutting out and stalling to my annoyance. i have replaced the points, condensor, rotor arm, dist cap ( abbreviated cos i cant spell distributor), ignition coil, ht leads, solenoid, have also done compression test when cold and when hot 150 psi on all cylinders and am running out of ideas the next step i am going to try is ensuring that i have power to the coil and fuel shut off solenoid, i will rewire this just to be sure but would appreciate any help on this. if any has had a similar prob to this, no matter how simple or complicated, even to running the risk of being called a **** by the infamous slob, all hail the slob we're not worthy hail great leader, bless us with your words of wisdom, you have power akin to the emporer ming off flesh gordon. many thanks monkeywrench:eek:

give us some more details on what exactly happens when it starts acting up.

try another coil, as even new ones have been known to fail.
try draining the fuel and refilling, could be water in the fuel. check fuel pump and flow rate. lastly clean and check out the carb. needle valve could be sticking or main jet getting blocked.

As 79 and Fatrover say it may be fuel starvation. I had very similar symptoms to you and replaced all electrical bits and overhauled the carb before finding the in line filter full of sludge.

yes, thats exactly wot the matter with mines was... have a look at the filter before ye go fiddlin about with the carbaretter or any leccy bits...

tried all this and also does exactly the same on lpg, which uses the venturi of the carb all leccy bits have been changed for second time so all new.

when it starts to act up, it starts to surge and cut out becomes very jerky as if its hunting for something (spark/fuel/air) then completely fails, when then it refuses to start but will turn over okay. If then left for a while it will start back up but then it does it all over again but randomly.

you need 3 tings to get yer injun runnin
compression

spark at the reet time

and fuel

you say you've check the compression bit and did the spark well now check the fuel bit ya ****

have already done those bits and same results, it runs and does the same on lpg. however when i drove it last night to show a mate to see if he could shed any light on it i noticed tha there apears to be an earthing issue as when i press the brake some lights on dashboard are trying to light up would not have noticed this as i only been out in it through the daytime lately as they lock my cell in the nights, but i was allowed to stay up late last night. do not know if this will solve it lets hope so, then those voices in my head will stop then, all i hear is ****, ****, **** continuously,

many thanks you lot for your ideas but keep em coming

ALL HAIL THE SLOB

mate of mine had th same thing with his series ,i stand to be corrected ,guess i depends which carb is fitted ,but isnt there a fuel guaze built into the carb behind a brass nut ,that acts as a final filter (his was partially blocked with goo)cleaned it out and hey presto no more probs.just a thought but mite be worth a look

just been looking at the wiring harness around the engine block and two/three wires have completely burned the insulation around them off also the insulation tape around it is shot to.

have replaced wiring harness and that has not cleared the problem but draining the petrol tank and letting the water out has fixed this, someone had filled tank up with water there was to much water for it to be a rain issue and i have my suspicions as to who it was, many thanks to all you ideas.
